do you ever think back over your life and and wonder about the worst thing you ever did?i guess ive done a few this is one. for me my worst day was at age 14. i had myself a daisy bb gun. i was shooting at everything in sight. bottles-cans-my sisters dolls. after some time i became quite an expert shot.sitting in a tree a pretty bird singing and paying no attention to me.well i aimed the gun and shot the bird.the small bb pellet bounced off the wing and did it no harm. i shot a second time on the wing with the same results. i dont think the bird knew i was shooting at it or it would have flew away. the third time i shot it i aimed at the head. that did it.the poor unfortunate bird fell to the ground its wings flapping and blood coming from the eye and mouth. what did i do and what do i do now? i knew the bird was not going to survive and was suffering. i had to kill it . not one of my proudest moments.i had no reason to take its life but i did. i got a shoved and put the dead bird in the ground.then to punish myself i smashed the gun on a rock and put it in the trash never to shoot anykind of gun again. if any good can come from thisi have been kind to animals all my life espically birds. ive gone out of my way to help turtles cross the highways i feed birds in the winter when everything is frozen and food scarce. i give money to animal shelters. young men sometimes do things without thinking about the consequenses of what there doing. that was me that day.i was the looser that day because now its something i cant forget.

Oh fred.
I had to smile at your post. Especially the bit about shooting at your sister's dolls.
You are giving yourself too hard a time. Forgive yourself.
I'll tell you what I did when I was ten.
My dad had this goldfish pond, I used to catch them in a net and lay them in the sun and watch them wriggle to death. Then I was so scared my dad would notice that I buried them in the garden and then my dad had it tarmaced.
Oh the guilt, it was only when I was 21 that I fessed up to him and he said he often wondered where his goldfish had gone and had spent years shouting at the cat for it...
I am not suggesting at any time that it is okay to treat animals in this way and I sort of get where you are coming from a little.
My brother once decided to bathe a kitten, in cold water. Poor thing was in shock and it died.

When I was about 8, my friend and I were playing with a dolls house. We decided to get the hamster and put it in the dolls house and pretend it lived there. It tried to get out of one of the windows so I slammed it shut and its little foot got caught and was bleeding. I still think about that too
Then there was freddy the frog which was only last year. I didn't even know he was there. I had the patio doors open and then at bedtime I closed them and went to bed.
Next morning I opened them and freddy keeled over, I'd jammed his lil leg in the doors and he's been there all night
I phoned the vet and looked online an everything to put him right
Wish I wasn't so soft
Errrrr cheers for bringing all that back into my mind

If that memory has made you a sensitive person who cares for animals and humans, then look at the good that came from it. Be grateful they bird was there so you could learn some life lessons. Now, chin up and continue on without regrets.
"When me and my sisters were in our early teens, we never got along very well. One day my 3 sisters were picking on me so bad that I felt so helpless; they were calling me names that I didn't like. So,I did the same.We were in the livingroom when my dad said to go in the bedroom and argue. He sent us all in the room and,we started fighting, like cats, literally .I was so tired of my sisters picking on me so,I stood up for myself.Fists were flying everywhere and, hair too!! .Now,tell me,who do you think came out of the room without a single scratch on her? . Sad but a true story. Now,me and my sisters are as close as can be."
A friend of mine in Scotland was a professional hit man working for the British government (so I suppose THAT justifies it!), and he told me on a number of occasions that he found it easier to kill humans than animals. He really had more compassion for the dog he used to nurse on his knees than human beings (and he was chosen by military psychologists from a number of others as a perfect candidate for such a job). I guess it takes all sorts to make a world... By the way, I'm sure the little birdie in question has pardoned you for your sins.

No, you were the winner that day because it taught you a lesson in kindness and love of all living creatures. You did one cruel, senseless thing and learned a powerful lesson from it, and have made up for it a million times since then. Blessings.
Nothing is all bad if good comes out of it. You can stop beating yourself up for that day, but keep living the lesson learned of loving and giving. We're all connected. "Mitakyue oyasin"..."all my relations"...it includes the birds, the trees, the grass, as well as other humans past, present, and future.
