Few weeks ago, I’ve been to a GP. She met me at the door to her room, and her first question was: “Are you here on your own?”

Slightly bewildered, I looked over my shoulder, saw no one there, and answered that I indeed was on my own, and who, prey tell, has she expected would come together with me?

Then she said: “Some relatives… you know, some patients come with their family…”

Now bewildered completely, I let this pass, just told her why I’ve come. Which she actually should have known, as I told that when reserving the time.

First few days after that I felt uneasy, couldn’t understand what was wrong and why (still don’t), but now “dust” has settled and “ashes” shaken of, and we use it as a joke within the family and friends, and laugh at it. We just make up different possible (and impossible) answers.

My question is: have you ever been asked a question that you regarded as inappropriate, and what did you answer?

Well… there’s nothing to do with as inveterate one as you are… but the mouse? Has she brought any relatives?

Not quite the same, but many years ago I was invited to a dinner party. I accepted, and then the hostess asked if I would like to "bring someone". I said thanks, but no, I'd come on my own.... at which point I was promptly uninvited, because without a partner, I'd "upset the numbers"!!!! I was totally crushed at the time crying but eventually managed to laugh about it!

These days, I think I'd say "don't worry about the numbers, I'll eat twice as much and talk twice as much, so you'll never notice there's not two of me!" rolling on the floor laughing cheers

That's brutal.....I know how you feel...I have stood in your shoes more than once...in a related context, in a man's situation, what often happens is, you befriend women, only to be dumped the moment they find lovers....o the moral of the story is, don't have wimmin friends...but that is a subject for another thread...doh

How sad, but that surely doesn´t happen these days does it?

If I´m invited to a dinner party, which is quite often, there are couples and singles. No prior thought to making up numbers thank goodness.

As for the OP. I have been stopped a number of times by Customs and asked "Are you travelling alone?".

very mad

yep especially when you are the only one in the car. Do border guards and customs and excise get discount on the blind dogs.

Such a wise and funny answer!

It’s pity that good answers sometimes come too late. At least to me. In my case I haven’t yet made up anything that remotely could be regarded as wise or funny.

As to a dinner-party… I think that it’s always funnier, spicier if you want, with few free “ions”.

Gussi, I asked a Customs guy at Heathrow one time, after he too stopped me. It is simply because I am a single, middle-aged woman with a very large suitcase! Prime target for drug smuggling apparently, be it deliberate or not.

My travels were due to work, so I was spending a year away which meant lots of luggage.

You shouldn’t take it too close to heart – you are an attractive woman, and they just want to draw out the procedure in order to be in your company few seconds more.

Don't know if it was so much of a funny when I walked away, but upon receiving the question of "which one are you?"... and realizing he wasn't sure, well I went home.

With the right people, that's certainly true - though I've had a few experiences of being a "free ion", and the automatic assumption has been that I must on the prowl. That's just really tedious. You try to make polite conversation with a man about something innocuous - sport, or something, and get treated to a long drivel about how fabulous their wives/girlfriends are, who should be there, but just happen to be hiking up Everest this evening, or similar. yawn I've then spend an hour or so with a glazed smile going "oooh, aaah, how wonderful" while thinking "Oh shut up! I wouldn't hit on you if you were the last man on earth!" frustrated laugh

head banger

One of my best friends once got rid of an annoying young man who wouldn't leave her alone at a party by waiting for a pause in the conversation, looking round the room, then saying "You know, I think I'm the only transvestite here!" Perhaps I should try that one - that would probably spice things up!! rolling on the floor laughing cool
