His name was Prof Stafford Beer (google him if you like)
He was my academic mentor and I felt very sad to hear he died in, I think, 2002.
He wasn't a guru, but he was a yogi, and an artist, and a Mathematician, and a poet, and a 'Freeman of the City of London' and had been a director of a publishing company and head of Operational Research of British Steel and he had helped many government leaders in things like developing the Canadian railway system and revolutionising how the economy was run in Chile and he served as an Officer with the Gurkhas in WW2 and he had a huge ego but was great fun to listen to and he held his tutorials in a pub and he was the world authority in Managerial Cybernetics and I was his best student in 1993/1994.
In response to: Do you agree with the observation that religious or political gurus are above all narcissist and deeply insane?
And are the followers as mentally ill as their masters?
Actually I think that often both the gurus and their followers are highly intelligent. But they have entered together into a collective delusion that distorts their ability to think rationally.
The guru may start off as simply a self-serving con-man who laughs at the gullibility of his followers, but over time they always get caught up in their own web of lies because their very position depends upon keeping up the lie at all times. After a while they lose touch with reality.

Religious and political ones, yes. Spiritual ones, no. Most of the truly spiritual "gurus" that I've met are actually very humble, and have a very peaceful aura to them.
Please remember one important thing: if you're starving and someone comes along with food for you, you're hardly going to be interested in the reasons WHY he's giving it to you. Similarly, if you listen to the words of a "false guru" who merely repeats the wisdom of others like a parrot, there still remains the possibility that YOU can wake up to the truth inherent in the words...(a perfect example of "poetic justice", in fact). If you meet a Buddha on the path, kill him...!

Actually I need to grow my balls and follow your advice to kill those "Buddhas"

Thanks for your opinion Ray. In fact, do you think mankind has ever been away from that scheme of leaders and gurus with their followers?

I respect your opinion but some of the "spiritual" ones are the worst in my opinion and they will act humbly just up to the point they think they have their followers in complete control, then the collective dellusion will follow its natural path.
Antjo39: Well, even if you have seen some good cases of gurus, there is always a question remaining: in which degree the inevitable adulation of the followers lead the guru down to the path of corruption. This is the typical case of politicians, the classical gurus of human insanity.
There are always weak minded people looking for something to grasp on to be it a leader, a lover, a politician, a movies or beanie babies.
The leaders and followers are independent of each other in large part no matter how strong the bond.
