Why do people do it? Is it just to get a deeper skin tone or just because it feels good if you live in a very cold country to sit in the broiling sun being slowly cooked like a turkey. Or is it for both reasons? How many people here on CS do it?daisy

I do it because it is like CS and other forms of meeting 'the ladies' it is where they hang out. Getting the tan is a sideshow.

I do it for the color to my skin. I'm naturally very pale and I like to have at least a bit of a tan, although I don't overdo it. When I wear summery skirts and dresses, it's nice to have some color on my legs and not feel like I need stockings to hide the paleness.

I do it for colour as living in a cold country, with lots of snow, the warmth of the sun makes me feel better and the colour of course makes me look healthy. I do always use sunscreen and my recent trip to the sunshine state, I was sunning myself there, for 1-2 hours per day, in one hour incremental periods. An hour in the morning and one in the evening...

I do it after being in the ocean for a while. Ilike the way the sun feels on my skin. I use a lot of block, and wear expensive shades to protect my diabetic eyes. Plus it puts me to sleep. And I can watch the men go by, without them knowing it.

I did it when I was younger, for both reasons. Now my tan comes from working outside in my garden and taking care of the lawn, so it's gradual and I have a soft tan by the end of summer. I know the hazards of sunbathing now, but would lay out if I went swimming, to dry off.

I choose not to and I live by the beach in Spain. I get just as brown walking the dog,and it's safer. So many people here have what you have just described. Some are lucky but some develop full blown skin cancer. I was told that at least 25% of the people here have had some sort of cancer from the sun.Is it worth it just to glow! J.M.O.

Living in Panama the challenge is how NOT to get tanned! Just hanging laundry in the backyard deepens my skin tone. I used to be lighter, my belly still is,but the rest of me, nuh uh scold I wear sunblock every day.

I used to have a lot of freckles in my face and I abused sunbathing, the golden tint to my skin made me look sporty and healthy, a natural magnet for guys. Because of the african blood in me (as well as in many people from Latinamerica) I tan fast.

Well, those freckles, one day decided to gang up together...and now I have two dark splotches in my face (think of MJ's vitiligo only backwards)...

I am undergoing treatment with a dermatologist and the spots are fading and you can hardly see them with make up on...the spots will disappear soon, but they will always be there, dormant. Now I use a 100 UV protection for my face, underneath my makeup. Even the fluorescent light, and the light coming from the computer screen are harmful. Unfortunately, they will not disappear and I will have to be in full make-up to the day I die, to protect my skin from the elements.

Who would have thunk, huh? confused
