THERE was a 51 per cent increase in the rate of young women intentionally self-harming between 1996 and 2006, which peaked in the 15- to 17-year-old age group, according to the first Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report on injuries.

The report, Injury Among Young Australians, published today, said the female rate for self-harming for ages 12 to 24 was at least twice as high as that for males between 1996-97 and 2005-06.

But young males had a much higher suicide rate. In 2005 it was almost four times that of young females, with 13 per 100,000 deaths compared with three.

The rate of intentional self-harm for young males and females increased by 43 per cent in the decade to 2006, from 138 per 100,000 to 197.

Well yes, two parents I know suffered 18 year olds topping them selves, another I knew was found eating excreta.
Myself I’ve had to over come heightened levels of stress from army experience. It’s pretty obvious to me that each and every one of us definitely has a responsibility in the widest sense to be mindful of our fellow brothers and sisters.
These forums indicate the state of our minds. To make little of such serious problems within our community demonstrates a complete lack of compassion and personal responsibility. Understanding the nature of our self-cherishing minds is of course the first step towards personally doing something about it. Thereby reinforcing our own personal commitment to develop a responsibility to not just talk rubbish all the time, and from my side take the insults in these forums with a grain of salt from small number individuals constantly hogging the threads in connecting singles forums.

I agree but how is that done? How do we change the way people view it?

I don't think people intentionally make little of it Rob.. its more they feel compassion and know there is a problem and knowing no other way to deal with the terrible stats they use humour to mask it? dunno

Im not sure who or what your talking about here really? confused

Might mean that some have different understandings for the word compassion, religious views are usually quite different to other more mindful interpitations.
In my mind compassion is understanding problems have there interdependant arising by virtue the certainty of the laws of cause and affect.
Each and every one of us have problems arising from those, wouldn't be here if we didn't.
Perhaps in relation to people feeling so down they turn to harming themselves, or taking there lives. Probably comes from ignorance of the nature of our being. Bottling things up a lot, feeling isolated, unable to find a way out or some impermanent thought.
I think comes from lack of understanding of the true nature of self, our shared human experience, also of course, lack of understanding of the interdependent arising of our problems.
Perhaps perhaps others are not putting aside enough time and useful support for welfare of the younger generation because they are so busy trying to make a buck...when i lived in NSW the local area (then) of around 35,00 people, had something like 23 young people top them selves every year, most appeared to be teenage kids of the middle class making money club, but not all.
As I've so bravely stated in another thread here in connecting singles. Our own happiness is our own responsibility. To expect others to maintain our happiness for us is a form of insanity. Of course we all try, but I think in reality ones own happiness is every individuals own responsibility.
Compassion should i believe, be directed to understanding others like ourselves, have and do no doubt continue to create the cause for suffering in consequences of there (our) own past and collective activities.
Breathing meditation gives the mind and body space thereby bringing our whole being back in balance...

Im not sure who or what your talking about here really?

Don't worry I've been called that for many years...might as well!!
