I guess to make the world a peaceful place, we need to be at peace with ourselves first. There is conflict at the level of society, at the level of the neighbourhood, in the family and yes there is constant turmoil and disquiet even within ourselves. Stands to reason that there will be quiet outside once we are at peace from within.

We are not a peaceful species. We love and participate in violence of many forms. I like to use the example of how we enjoy violence in movies. As long as we can justify it, it becomes ok. Hence we have the need to create the labels of "good" and "bad", so that in overcoming the "bad", the "good" is justified in being violent.

I think the state of peace whether at the individual level or at the social level is an ideal we aspire to... a stepping stone in our own quest for a divine state.

So do you want a sane answer to this next question or no?

I agree, it'd be ideal if we were a peaceful species, but there is so much contrast between peoples minds, and we are all still spurred on by the most primeval instinct which is survival. how can one be peaceful with a heart that beat's so rapidly. maybe that is why the people who follow buddhism are so peaceful within, because they have learnt to slow down.

I would dearly love to say yes we are but the answer is no. We have had so many oportunities over time to solve differences peacefully but have shown an incredibly damaging & sometimes violent mindset in the process. Entire nations have dissapeared over their petty problems, the Axtecs & Inca's were quite brutal in their treatment of people from countries /tribes they defeated in war.

One of the saddest things for me to ever have researched was on November 11th 1918 when the armistace was signed there was still 6 hours before it came into being at 11.00am but in this 6 hour time frame the allies them selves had 10000 men killed and 35000 wounded, for what to make some generals ego a bit better.

actually steve there is a very simple solution to most of the carnage now. it requires a change or UN process wherein only peaceful countries are allowed entry. peaceful means they are prepared to give up the guns and bullets and other toys for their ticket.

i hope to discuss this with UN reps in bali next visit perhaps? they must also be prepared to deal succinctly with all leaders not respecting life similarly with other terrorists then. give ALL the weapons to the UN would be the theme.

alternatively, a new UNITED NATIONS can be created online but with a different structure. all people prepared to join need to be prepared to only vote for peaceful solutions ever and the constant impeachment and indictment of all leaders prepared to willingly murder among us.

such a 'nation' would subscribe enmass after each new global atrocity rising too and they would steadily rise up amid all other nations and form a group with the voting power and noise to make a difference even in the current UN.

such a group would be able to obtain real leverage in the UN now. can you imagine if all of the voting age women in the world suddenly joined and decided it was the best way to protect the futures of their children then?

because they would rise up amid all nations and would grow larger than any one nation they would steadily gain useful voice and following wherever crimes are committed again.

etc.

Yep,keep on turning the other Cheek until you run out of Cheeks!
It is one thing to initiate Aggression and Violence, and quite a different thing to use Violence to stop it in the Bud!

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf" --George Orwell

The Initiation of Violence has to be Condemned, not the Use og Necessary Force to encounter that Violence!
There is a Big Difference.
The Right to Selfdefense!!!!

Interesting and what would happen to the armament factories and the Government revenue that is made from selling arms and media revenue for news stories that come from living in a violent society?
