I'm looking out my window, the barge is sitting out on Darnley Bay.Every year we have our supplies of food, hunting gear, some clothing, supplies for building a home, toys ,toys meaning ski-doos,ATV'smotor boats etc..,delivered by sea lift. This can be a very exciting time for the community. This can also mean employment for some. Every year the captain of the ship treats the locals with fresh fruits and candies;what a way to share and appreciate. This is just a way of life up North.
PB, when I was in the US Air Force I was stationed on one of the islands in the Alaska chain. We used to get all of our 'things' by boat. It was an exciting time. Once the fresh fruit and veggies were gone--they were gone and we ate the other stuff the rest of the year. The weather was too bad most of the year for the ships to come in other than mid-summer.
So I do remember the supply vehicles and the excitment when it arrived. Enjoy!

Thank you!It just makes you think what the little things in life (up here) means to someone who lives in such a remote area.

I look back on my time in Alaska and those two places with very fond memories. I had been a southern boy and never had seen snow before going north. I left Tampa Florida where it was 86 degrees and arrived where it was -20 degrees. Wow!!!! Life I found out can be real different.
The experience of the supply ships and when the supply airplanes could land were the best events ever. For one thing, the island had only men on it. The supply airplanes had female flight attendants.... This made for an exciting time at the club that night. They had to stay overnight before heading back to civilization.
Life here really makes you who you are,a survivor. It can also make you a better person;for me,it's kept me grounded.Life here really has it's benefits yet,it is a harsh life at times.

gosh that makes me realise how much I take being able to pop to tesco for granted
Last year we ran out of most of all the essentials, we had to get it flown in so it can be quite costly. I,on occasion, have my food supplies flown in,if I can afford it.
caspatch: i know when i flew to alaska the plane landed at several small places and unloaded supplies in big tubs, also the mail

Polarbutterfly: I just wanted you all to know in this small way what life is really like up here.
Believe it or not I envy you the privilege of being at one with nature. We sometimes take life for granted and little things like your post pull us down to earth.

I guess living a life like I do has brought me to realize that I am truly lucky to live this way of life.
