I voted Yes the first time and I voted Yes yesterday thumbs up

I understood how the NO Supporters would be ticked off that people had to come out and vote the 2nd time on the same issue but I still think its a good thing that the Yes vote passed this time around and by a healthy majority.

TheRocker: It was a fair and free election and "we the people of Ireland vote YES to Lisbon"

I think it is offending at calling the majority of Irish people scum for exercising the right to voice their opinion in a european election.

Clearly 65% of the Irish people saw that Ireland needs a more efficient and safer europe for all!

Only 51% voted no last time.

This is a clear result and people where more informed this time, that is why we have the result.

Yep!!!

I agree Rocker.

Seems that the YES campaign outspent the NO campaign 10 to 1 and RTE suspended their equal airtime rule!

I was only a teen during the 80s, but over the years, I've seen how much has been done in this country on back of EU money.

Also, Ireland is SO shafted financially at the moment, we're depending on the EU to keep us afloat - any people out of work at the moment, myself included should remember our weekly money is coming directly from europe.

As for the contents of Lisbon itself, most of it was paperwork and red-tape, other than the military bit, and let's be honest, our military is miniscule compared to any other nation, so I really don't believe we've much to worry about there.

As for the bit about losing our independance, we started down that road when we originally joined the EU.

BTW, I didn't vote the first time cuz I thought it would just sail thru, this time I made sure I went down to vote...

... and I voted YES.

All this talk about our independence...

Before we joined the EU we were completely, totally and utterly dependent on the UK. We had little or no other trade links. Our laws were based on UK law. We were Britain's "poor relation". Most of our unemployed went to the UK to get work..and the treatment they received is well documented.

We may have had our own Government since 1922 but everything we did had to follow Britain..we had no other choice. We were independent in name only. It suited ritain for us to be kept weak and linked to them.

We are more independent and sooo much stronger as a nation in the EU than we ever were before we joined.

I just hope that the jobs and prosperity promised by the government if they got a yes vote is not another of their lies. People voted yes because of the state the country is in and were afraid not to. The treaty is not going to do anything for the crisis we are in now.
I really hope I am wrong but somehow don't think so.

yes it is true that Ireland gained a lot from joining the e.u. one example is the M50. That was paid for by europe, and we are still paying for it. We must have paid for it 100 times over but still the tolls have to be paid, who is scamming who, the government scamming us. Where did the money come from for the yes vote campaign, from the e.u. No campaign had to find their own
A no vote would not put us out of e.u.
It was a no to the treaty.

Well we had our chance and but the scaremongers won.sigh blues

Godsgift: Yet again a YES campaigner refuses to state the truth so I'll repeat it. I called the politicians who led us down this path scum. The general population aren't in a position to gerrymander. Look it up if your education is lacking. If you believed your path to be the right one you would not have to deliberately misrepresent my words. You have got your way. Let's see if you can get through the rest of the day without telling any more lies.

I notice that neither France nor the Netherlands were offered a second vote. Then again, the rest of Europe weren't offered a first one.

Mark my words, your children will pay a high price for this day's work.

hey im a no campaingner ,i was quoting someone else on the thread

stanley8m: I voted YES because the lisbon treaty will make trade and commerce between the countries easier , it cuts down the beuracracy and red tape we have to go through in order to get anything done, therefore making a more efficient european union, its not about a superstate controlled by germany or any other country and we as citizens of ireland will still have a vote and the same say as a person living in frankfurt or madrid in europes future, thankfully the irish electorate showed a bit of common sense and didnt listen to the scaremongers and their barstool bull and voted YES on lisbon,, ,,

wexlady41: Not to mention roads, schools, hospitals, and the many industrial and retail estates that have been built with EU money... enabling us to attract and keep employers to our small island.

Many multinational and US companies have provided money and jobs in this little country because of our proximity to and memership of the EU.

For those of you who think that the present government are the only ones to ever benefit from Europe..remember we have been in the EU for 35 years and there have been several governments..of all "denominations" over that time.

Our place in Europe is the only thing that will see us through the next few economically difficult years and well beyond. This is a GREAT day for Ireland.
