bettyboop63: As Ive mention b4 I have hepititisC the result of a blood transfusion I recieved in 1981,since this time I have been in hospital several times as a result of the infection tho they only diagnosed me 3 yrs ago.Whilst discussing my situation with friends and family the other night my sister commented that millions were put at risk from this anyone who had blood contact eg;dentistry, doctors, army.police, firebrigade etc..may have unknowingly been infected herself included but she says she would rather not know ..what are your thought on this would you rather know?
Hi bettyboop, you are very brave and open about your illness.
I know next to nothing about what you have, but I do believe most people would prefer not to know if they have an undiagnosed disease. Although this may not be sensible, it´s a normal feeling based primarily on fear.
Here in Spain the family unit is still traditionally very close. If a relative is in hospital for example, the family take it in turns to sleep over in the hospital. In many ways this is a good thing in my opinion, but my students who are mainly doctors, tell me that the seriousness or severity of an illness is not usually something that the patient can deal with, or even want to know about. Whether that is due to the tradition and culture I really don´t know. However, the family are the ones who are told the truth, they carry the burden, and make choices about how much to tell their sick family member.
What I´m trying to say, albeit in a roundabout way, is that fear of the unknown may well explain why many people, including your sister, prefer to remain blind to any possible health issues.

I would want to know of any condition I could have, even if I am not a brave person, because only if we have all the information we can make the right decisions.
BTW, I had type A ( I think it is) hepatitis at the age of six and it was very serious. I have always known that the virus stays in the body for around 35 years and that I could never donate blood.
My thoughts go to you, BB what a strong person you are.
