My son is watching TV behind me - most disturbing - effen rs hole and Cheese and Rice are the only words these guys have in their vocabulary.

Reservoir Dogs it's called. These days everything on T.V. seems to be so third rate and seedy. Is it just me?

I have to admit, it can be difficult to find quality programming these days, Apostophe. I understand your frustration.

I know what you mean but it does add to the power of that movie and some others when it is used to displays the nature of the characters. When it is just used to pad out a poor script then it sucks something rotten.IMO. I don't like it in general....wine

I gave up watching real TV about 10 years ago. I refused to pay for cable or satellite when there was little on actually worth watching. I have an immense DVD library (about 600 movies) and it keeps growing. I'm never without something I truly want to watch.

Does he reads books? May be it is better to built him a mini library or send him in a sport sections or else?

I don't want to sound like an annoying, dull type ... but if that bothers you so much why not to get rid of TV or at least cable ... to have just basic programs?

And there are a lot of DVDs and tapes with great movies as well

And they just spoiled a favourite song by Steelers Wheel - Stuck in the middle with you. An absolutely cruel and graphic movie.

To the kind lady about a little library... my kids are just not into reading - you can bring a horse to the water but you can't force it to drink...

Thanks all.

In fairness, it's an 80s film and most folk would never even have heard of Steelers Wheel had it not been for the film.It wasn't that popular when it was initially released. Most folks on this site won't even know of Gerry Rafferty. It's a Scottish thing.applause

An 8Os movie!

I'm surprised that it's that old but what struck me so forcefully was the absolute cruelty. I saw a movie in the late seventies that disturbed me so that my chest ached when I left the cinema, but I sat rivited throughout - Apocalypse Now - a Vietnam story. For the life of me I can't recall such graphic cruelty as in Reservoir Dogs.

RDM59: It is amazing what sells best and it is so core and basic ....

I do have concerns over violent video games for kids but when I think back, as a kid I made toy guns, spears, bows, arrows etc. So that basic instinct must have been in me too, and back down through history of course, it is in our nature. We played at killing games, cowboys and indians, soldiers etc. But somehow that seemed more acceptable and natural then rather than how it being provided and marketed today via computer or DVD. There is such gratuitously violent stuff out there to sterilize the younger and vulnerable minds I fear. But we now see it in reality on TV also. The news clip showing video footage from a camera mounted on a rocket heading for the window of an Iraki bunker. Do our minds become conditioned by this ? Monkey see, monkey do.

The fun was mainly in the making of the part, learning to use the tools and then the skills to use the weapon. How many kids nowadays are out in the garage with their dad, making something while he is busy too. Not many, and not many dad's either I'll bet. They are more likely to be in front of a PC fighting over the use of the mouse instead of a mallet.

We don't repair much these days, the creative manual tasks required are being removed or are now reduntant for us. Skills are being forgotten. We bin it and buy another, this is the modern day way.

I suspect in the future, wars will be fought from computer chairs. The best killers will be the best nulified trigger happy gamers from todays virtual training ground.

progress eh..
thumbs up
