This thread is not intended to disrespect anyone, I'm just wanting to learn something. Now,there are a lot of elderly and older people who started smoking before medical information was available to warn them of the dangers of their choice. With public information reaqdily available and widely publicized in today's society, why do young people start smoking. Since it doesn't make you look tough, doesn't look cool, and it doesn't make you beautiful, why would you do it? Just looking for input.

Well, when I started smoking, it wasn't bad for the health and it didn't bother anybody.
For to-days young people, I would say they start smoking because they are pissed off by all the politically correct advices, announcements, threats, councils, medical informations, bad looks, that invades them. Too much is too much. And teens always liked to upset their parents and teachers.
To ban smoking in every public place is the best way to give them the desire to smoke.
Like alcohol had a huge success during prohibition.

I forgot to say I'm still a chain-smoker and am not willing to quit. It's one of my pleasures in life.
Also have to add my mother got throat cancer at the age of 40. She never smoked in her life. My father died at the age of 44. He didn't smoke. My best friend died from lung cancer at 52. She didn't smoke.
Well, .... I'm proud that I reach the age of 64 in good health.

strictest prohibition of smoking is in American. There is now almost become a shame to smoke. Health, fitness and regular medical control became an integral part of life. Propagate them to the global media under the control of global corporate business. "Cigarette smoke kills" - is heard on all television.

But cancer is increasing.

Japan and Greece have the highest number of smokers in the world, but the minimum number of patients with lung cancer. Contrary to them - America, Australia, Russia and some south Pacific countries have the lowest number of smokers, and among the first in the number of patients with lung cancer.

Is not this a little strange if you just accept that tobacco smoke causes lung cancer, throat, tongue ...? Is this statement generally scientifically proven? What is the ingredient in tobacco smoke carcinogenic? Where are the scientific references for this claim? Or were all invented by the media?

Well, in this ever more politically correct society, it is nice to have something that I enjoy and is legal.
Apparently, nobody has a mind of their own and everyone needs to have government intervention to save them from themselves.

It is interesting to note that Alcohol has no health warning on the bottle, it kills people, ruins families and relationships and causes untold violence, last time I looked, nobody lost their house,job,wife/husband,business or self respect via smoking.

I agree with your thoughts on Big Brother dictating more and more in many countries. And I don't know if there are health warnings on the actual bottles (yet), but at least there is in the advertisements for alcohol, in some countries.

Although alcohol indeed can lead indirectly to violence, etc, there is one major difference between that and smoking: smoking directly affects others adversely, and not only harms the smoker themselves.

I think it starts as peer pressure to try it. When one person does try it, they say "You didn't even inhale!" So they begin to inhale. Soon after they are addicted. Anything can be considered cool depending on who the teen ringleader is or what is currently happening within your own peer group.

I wish I never started!

So you think the US is bad, in Ireland you cant smoke in the Pub for Gods sake, or in the restaurant, and it is getting to the stage, not even in your own car, especially if it is a company car. So the only place left will maybe in your own home.
and yes I know it is a filthy habit, but it is still enjoyable, off for one now

Smoking is getting more and more restricted all the time, In nome cases I think that is a good thing, Not to many years ago I cound not go dancing or out with friends because I have an asthma type reaction to smoke and so I stayed at home, Now, at least in this state it is ileagle to smoke in public buildings, still ok outside, but now I and otheres like me can go out and have a good time withough ending up on inhaliers just so we can breath.

I appreciate the input from everyone. This thread stems from a discussion between a few friends at work, and I thought it would be fun to see what others had to say.
