TheresMyFriend: I bought 2 guitars, about a year and a half ago!
One electric, and one acoustic...both still in the box, propped up in the corner of the room.
Have no idea of their name!
Had big ideas, of learning...now that I am retired, but for some reason...just haven't attempted anything yet!
I think it may be because, I'm not sure I would be able to learn/play either one!
One question...which one would you recommend to learn on first, as a newbie?
Learn on the acoustic first. Learn a handful of chords i.e. g, c, d, e, Am, practise strumming and changing chord fluidly. Buy a book containing some of your favourite songs- no Van Halen yet. Try playing along to the CD changing when the recording changes. A guitar tuner will be essential at this point. There are many online resources I hear these days so Good Luck

I would suggest learning on the electric first. For one, it will be easier on your fingers, and they are easier to play.
I would also suggest starting out with basic power chords (the one and five). It will get you playing right away, and then later you can learn some full chords on the acoustic.

You were a lead guitarist? So was I! No wonder we get along
I had a 1968 Martin D-28. I LOVE that warm Martin tone but after a few years of VERY extreme love & care, alas, the neck bowed & there is no nut for a truss rod adjustment. I also have a 1948 Gibson G-45; & the LOVE of my life; my Delux Super Stratocaster! It totally ROCKS!
May I suggest to new learners, a copacetic book called, "Fretboard Roadmaps for Guitar," by Hal Leonard. (Available at Amazon.com) It's written in easy-to-understand English & takes all the frustrating mystery out of guitar playing. Wish he'd have written it 47 years ago when I started learning to play at age 10! Hope this helps!
Blues63: I was waiting for you to show up. How are you Beautiful?
