A manual shift car.
This thread is aimed mainly at people form America where automatic gearboxes are the norm. In the uk, automatic boxes are few and far between. So I was just wondering, how many Americans have never driven, or would not be able to drive a manual shift car with a clutch and gear shift.

Give me Automatic any day..... Dont drive anything else....
I can drive anything from a gocart to an 18 wheeler semi. And a lot of other stuff besides. I seem to have passed it on because three of my four boys are truck drivers.

If you pass your driving test in an automatic does that allow you to drive a manual? In the uk you would have to take another test if you've only passed in an auto.

bodleing: Hi Ziva
I must admit, I do prefer automatic but only ever owned one. They are getting more popular over here, still very much in the minority.
Can you drive a manual if you had to though?
If I had to I could....I did it before, it was a Van, But just have ur vomit bag ready... I dont like them....I did my driving exam in a Automatic, those days one had a choice, and the lessons where less too....money saver... Anyway I drive USA cars anyway....wont get me a sardine car....

As far as I know they don't differentiate between trannys. . To change licence types you would have to do a test, say to go from a passenger car to a commercial truck.
I can drive both (have owned both) - and no, you don't have to re-test to drive a standard shift - one test, one license covers all passenger cars. The only time you'd have to take a separate test is to drive a commercial vehicle or some other special use vehicle. <<<< and of course, ya gotta take a driving test for one of these!

I know what you mean. I have a van and a pick up truck. I dont fit in the cars they build now.

I can and do drive a vehicle with a standard transmission. I actually prefer the standard transmission. Growing up on a farm, I had the oppertunity to learn and had to learn how to drive with a standard. (the farm grain truck) But, because of the popularity of the automactic, most in north america never had the oppertunity to learn on a standard, and would be in trouble if they had to drive a standard. Now even the semi-trucks can have auto-mactic transmissions.
The first car my mom bought me ('79 Plymouth Arrow) was a stick-shift. I WANTED it that way. That was back in '82. I even taught my older brother how to drive stick. I have automatic now... only because it's not so easy to steer while holding coffee, a cigarette, & the cell phone, while applying makeup.

I had an automatic Car in 2007 but i like manual transmission due to its Good pickup and good fuel consumption. Manual transmission consum less fuel than automatic

Yes, that is the main reason for their unpopularity here in the uk.
