A manual shift car.

This thread is aimed mainly at people form America where
automatic gearboxes are the norm. In the uk, automatic
boxes are few and far between. So I was just wondering,
how many Americans have never driven, or would not be able
to drive a manual shift car with a clutch and gear shift.

Hi Zivawave

I must admit, I do prefer automatic but only ever owned one.
They are getting more popular over here, still very much in
the minority.

Can you drive a manual if you had to though?

If you pass your driving test in an automatic does that
allow you to drive a manual? In the uk you would have
to take another test if you've only passed in an auto.

As far as I know they don't differentiate between trannys. . To change licence types you would have to do a test, say to go from a passenger car to a commercial truck.bouquet

I can drive both (have owned both) - and no, you don't have to re-test to drive a standard shift - one test, one license covers all passenger cars. The only time you'd have to take a separate test is to drive a commercial vehicle or some other special use vehicle.motorcycle <<<< and of course, ya gotta take a driving test for one of these! laugh

I can and do drive a vehicle with a standard transmission. I actually prefer the standard transmission. Growing up on a farm, I had the oppertunity to learn and had to learn how to drive with a standard. (the farm grain truck) But, because of the popularity of the automactic, most in north america never had the oppertunity to learn on a standard, and would be in trouble if they had to drive a standard. Now even the semi-trucks can have auto-mactic transmissions.

I've had both, and an automatic is better in snow. you can feather it better so you spin less.bouquet

The first car my mom bought me ('79 Plymouth Arrow) was a stick-shift. I WANTED it that way. That was back in '82. I even taught my older brother how to drive stick. I have automatic now... only because it's not so easy to steer while holding coffee, a cigarette, & the cell phone, while applying makeup. dunno

My friends & family already know that's a given, since it's against the law around here to talk on the phone while driving! wink

Yes, that is the main reason for their unpopularity here
in the uk.

The cars in the UK are extremly cheap and the patrol is expansive so the manual transmission is Good and it has many benefits including parts costwine
