bodleing: Just wondering, have any of you ever drove a stick shift without a clutch? By that I mean the clutch has become inoperative due to snapped cable of loss of hydraulics.
If you get the revs at the right level it is possible to change gear without crunching of the gears.

Takes a bit of practice, but is possible.
It does, I've had loads of practice, used to repair mainly vauxhalls many years ago. The HB Viva was notorious for snapping clutch cables, used to go out and pick one up at least once a week. Had to drive our van back with a snapped clutch cable a couple of months ago in fact. The hardest bit is stopping and starting.

Guess what was the first car I ever owned..... yes... a Viva HB... my pride and joy
Yes... being permanently engaged in gear does make coming upto a junction quite interesting though !
Take a look on my profile at the Aston Martin replica I built. Great fun, went like a rocket, but tricky one day when the brake servo diaphram sprung a leak approaching a junction at about 60mph.... glad I always kept the handbrake well tight. Crashed a few of the gears too trying to slow it down !! Whey hey
This thread is aimed mainly at people form America where automatic gearboxes are the norm. In the uk, automatic boxes are few and far between. So I was just wondering, how many Americans have never driven, or would not be able to drive a manual shift car with a clutch and gear shift.

Yes, the car and the hair look in fine condition.
Coming to a jucntion or traffic lights does present a problem, but usually you can slip into neutral without a problem and stop. It just means you have to restart with first gear engaged kangaroo style. Not sure how legal it is though.

I popped a clutch line at a loading dock after making a delivery one time. This was with a 22 foot box truck and I was about 60 miles from home. Needless to say it was a tense trip but I made it without incident. The hardest part was getting out of the loading area without hitting anything.

Manual definitely, if your into driving, particularly fast cars through windey roads, thats why most sports cars are mostly manual, they are a lot more responsive, however having said that if you have a large car and you spend your life up and down motorways (freeways) then it can be an advantage having an auto.
I had a job in the Highlands where I had to drive an automatic people carrier. I hated it! It was so unresponsive on the roller-coaster type roads up there! I much prefer a manual gearbox
Er..I'm only allowed drive an automatic, no seriously..three driving schools couldn't teach me to drive a manual, I'm terminally uncoordinated Heck, bring on the electric bumper cars or teleportation even!! Beam me up Scotty

Well, I wouldn't mind a go at teleportation either!! Could have a wee trip over to Canada!!

Mine has a 5 speed. Race cars have an "in & out" box..
