Ok, I am having a debate with a friend and wanted some opinions. Who thinks that omitting information is a form of lying? Do you think that telling someone something you left out before is selfish because it hurts that person?
My stance is that this is a form of lying and that eventually the truth will come out. This ends up hurting your relationship and the person who doesn't know the information. You cannot build a realtionship on lies. I am talking major secrets like cheating etc.

Absolutely. Ommitting is a way of hiding something. You have to be 100% honest with the other person. I certainly beleive in that; guess that is why I am still single. blues

So you don't think that by telling that person something that would hurt them, you are being selfish? My friend claims we only tell things to make ourselves feel better and it has nothing to do with the other people involved.

It depends on what you omit and why you do it. Some things are nobody's business. Other things are important to tell people.

Like I said major secrets like I am cheating on you. Or I sleep i my exes bed when I visit my kids, etc.
See I am disturbed by his logic which is off. I am in desperate need of counter-arguements.

When my daughter was very young I taught her that omitting was the same as a lying.
The truth will always set you free. Feelings may be hurt but it is better than hurting a life.

I have stated that you cannot keep a secret forever and that when the truth comes out the betrayal seems worse because you chose not to tell.

Hiding the truth is FAR WORSE than the truth coming out 'in the wash' at a later date.

I absolutely agree but how to express that the hurt is greater. My friend says what if they never find out? I say I will know. I think it comes down to a difference in morals and ethics.

I adore your sentiments - tell me the truth how much you love me and I'll set you free after I've had my evil way with you!

You answered your own question....you can't build a relationship on lies.

Hiding truths about oneself shows a lack of respect for the other person to display trust and understanding.

No, it wouldn't be selfish as if I were being selfish, I would keep it to myself. Hiding it only makes things worse. If the person truly loves you, they will accept what you have to say no matter what it is. However, this is just my opinion and I am sure others would think keeping somethings to themselves is better.
