Hiya Kezza.. I am a convert to the front loader.. by accident.. I had a top loader and lost it in my last custody dispute.. and then a mate won a front loader in a custody dispute and sold it to me for half price..his half! rolling on the floor laughing and I am a convert.

In my opinion and I am sure this would be backed up by research, the front loader certainly appears to use a lot less water, and a fair amount less detergent. Its also quicker and tends to spin the clothes dryer.

Mine is an LG IntelloWasher.. its the smartest thing in this house .. has more cycles than the Australian womens hockey team and has more settings than Windows Vista but its a ball tearer.

Easy to operate and fairly quiet unless you are on top speed spin mode and then it sounds like a 747 taking off for about 3-4 minutes.

Cheers

I have had the same question for a while, and no definitive answers as of yet, just opinions. Nobody on the planet is going to tell you what they have is crap, be it front or top load, or even an old wringer type. laugh

I have a top load and a wringer. I know, ancient technology, and they look it. roll eyes I've only used the wringer for coveralls and shop rags, so it should last forever, seeing as how varsol hasn't had any negative effects on it, as of yet.laugh

Personally, I like the front load idea because of the space it saves, and less water, energy, and time factor, as TARA has mentioned in his post. Mind you, most of the new washers are pretty effecient compared to the old clunkers I'm running.

They do however vibrate pretty damn good on the spin cycle, if anyone's interested. grin

Buy what you like and suits your needs, without breaking the budget, and hopefully you get many years of trouble free service.

I have the top loader but only because I am the type who likes control over it as I often add clothes that I have forgotten and I can stop and start when ever I want, plus the spinner is pretty powerful and get the clothes nearly dry.

That said I know the front loader is very popular, what ever you would be comfortable with. Its all a matter of taste.

I remember many years ago when we moved to Tas, the house we purchased had one of these early front loaders A Brevis I think well it was a big heavy old thing. The first time I started it I just put the washing in and left it well about 15mins later I heard this very loud bang... thud.... thud.I raced to the laundry and there in all its glory was the Brevis jumping around the the room spouting soap bubbles everywhere. I can laugh now but at the time it was terrifying as as I went in to turn it off it came jumping right at me and by this time the bubbles were starting to fill the laundry, the feeling of helplessness came over me because I swear that bloody thing knew I was there and was trying to to get me in a corner! somehow I got out, the bubbles by now were going down the hallway.
It came to me! the power box... turned the main power off and went to survey the damage never seen so many bubbles in all my life.
Dents in walls but lucky.
Found out after that these monstrosities had to be cemented into the floor and the previous owners took their good washer and placed this one in its place.

Hi Kezza wave

Get another Simpson for use (top loader).
Have had my lastest Simpson for 5 years and still still going well (yes we have them here in nz lol) and it's awesome, 7,5 kg so can handle heaps and has all the special cycles, delicates, woollens etc

Washes well but the only thing I don't like is when it finishes it's cycle - it beeps, and beeps and doesn't shut up until you turn it off - really ignoring if ya put a load of washing on at night before going to bed, as ya just hear beap beap beap and then end up having to get up and turn damn thing off - not nice in winter laugh

I've been told that the front loaders are much better insofar as water comsumption. They are more expensive though.

I couldnt afford that, so I have a top loader Fisher & Paykel, had it about 8years, only had the repair man to it once, and the repair cost was reasonable.

I have always had Simpsons up till this last machine.

Just dont go for the cheap n nazty Kmart brands !!! My girlfriend bought one & dead set it shredded her clothes in about 3 months !!!!

I personally think the front loaders take way to long to finish a cycle
my life to busy for that!!!

Hi Kez

I think I would go a front loader. They are better on water and more energy efficient . I have an Electrolux that hasn't let me down , but if I were you I think I would go with the LG's . They seem like a really good brand .Probably about a 6 or 7kg bowl .

Better idea, bring your clothes here Kez and we can use my Simpson, it's a top loader and uses front loader detergent, bit of both flavours....I will help you fold them up when they're dry.......grin

I use a 7kg LG front loader, if I can work it out anyone can, and kizzy27 the slow timer can be changed to a quick cycle? But the slow timer uses less power and water,
My LG is 6 years old, no maintenance cost, and it has moved house 5 times in the back of a truck!
I can even wash my queen size donnas in it,
If it ever requires a maintenance man I will just throw it out and buy a new one as it is way out of warranty,

No cloths were harmed in this thread
grin
