jlw45: how many of you would consider living aboard a sailboat?...if you've had your fill of one place, just pull up anchor and see where the wind blows you... there's alotta romantic ideas, about living on a boat but, ruff weather can be a beeyatch...
To live on-no. My idea of roughing it is staying at the Sheraton. Or riding in a car with roll up windows. What is with that?

I have spent many years in a shipyard repairing Sail and Motor Yachts as well as Cruise trip Catamarans and we have a name for Water Craft. "A boat is a small depression on the water into which you throw money". So many people decide cruising is a cheap way to travel and see the wonders of the world until you have to get a haul out and a bottom job. Here in the hot climate Fiberglas boats are prone to get a disease called "osmosis" where big and small blisters form on the outside of the hull. All of that must be ground out and the hull dried out for weeks before the gouges are refilled and the hulls are faired and smoothed then get bottom paint. It is said that 20 to 25% of the original price of a boat will be spent each year just keeping her repaired. Not a cheap way to travel. I have been asked many times what kind of boat do I own. My answer is "None,if I want to go for a boat ride I hop aboard a Cruise Ship." I can have all the fun and none of the work.

When I was younger I helped my father build two boats. And spent time at sea and camping. Now he was one that really believed in roughing it. I am with you a cruise ship will do nicely
Veritaas: "Shiver me timbers", another one. Now sailing in warmer waters sounds very appealing, would not refuse a lifetime of that!
As romantic as it may sound, living aboard a mono hull sailboat smaller that about 40 feet long will give you so many bumps on the head you will learn to hate it. You are also forever stepping up. down or over something. Crawling to the head in the bow is a real treat in rough water too. Catamarans are a lot better about the room factor. At least you can stand up straight most of the time. I know a lot of people who absolutely love living aboard so it suits some just fine. Any questions? ask me, I'll tell you the truth.

yep, you have a good point...and very valid, at that...a boat can be an ongoing expense but, knowing how to work on one helps...
i never said it would be a cheap way...just an adventureous way

I have always been drawn to the rough elements in weather and in nature and dont mind the hardship. I will go sailing quite often now the weather is supposed to be warming up. My makers lived on boats for many a year, so I guess it could well be inherited
