jeepers: I guess it is just up to the lifestyle you choose. A lot of people here on the island live aboard boats, but it is a lot of work and it isn't always as simple as pulling anchore and sailing off into the sunset.
very VERY true...the salt can play hell on, just about anything...there's always something to be done on a boat, or to a boat...

pulling up anchor can be easy...until it gets stuck...laugh mumbling

no, like i said in my opening statement...there's alot more to it than sailing away in sunset....but there's alotta good, AND bad, in just about every endeavor you could imagine....dunno cheers

Quite...I sailed to Ireland and back last year. Not straight forward by any means. In fact the return journey was quite an epic,
scary to say the least.uh oh

jeepers: I know a couple who lived of a sail boat together for about 19 years. This is what I would call the ultimit test of being able to live together and get along, especialy when at sea for months at a time..
It isn't for eveyone.

For me, it seems like too much of an inconvinience if this is your only residence.

Hi Jeepers. Good wishes to you. I like your attitude man.handshake

I had a 31' wooden cruiser, the "Lady Di." Just big enough to live aboard, but I never did. Stayed only on week-ends and overnight trips. Was very nice to have a "room on the water," in downtown Tacoma.

I used to love to sleep on board, even at the marina, tied in the slip. The feel of the gentle rocking, the sea smell, even the sound of the ropes creaking with the rhythm of the water.

Oh, and the sound of a hard rain, pounding on the deck above, while snuggling warm in the roomy forward birth, unforgetable.

The best part for me is the feeling of freedom on the water, to heave anchor and just go, anywhere.

yea, i've been on a pretty hairy sail as well...it can be very scary...we were in a 42 ketch...and when the waves were above the spreaders, that 42 ft boat felt like a canoewow laugh ...the boat would "surf" down the waves and CRASH into the next, sending sprey all the way back over me ,while on the helm...when we got back to land, we found out our bow sprit was cracked, from all the slamming...if it would've give way, the standing rigging could've killed one of us....the seas definatly are'nt a playground, that's for sure...uh oh cheers laugh

....that's what i'm talking about...

a boat is'nt a cheap venture, by any stretch of the imagination...you can pay as much for a boat as you can a house, in most case, depending on size and make....but with a house, you are where you are, and you'de better like it...laugh

i guess i just have a travel lust...dunno laugh

It was much more work than owning/operating a classic aerobatic airplane. The expense was similar.

A boat can be legally considered your residence. You do not even have to rent a slip. Anchorage has no fee almost anywhere.

Freedom. Risk.

Lots of labor, lots!

I use to leap over the wake of a Paddle wheel,

I am not sure I would want to be in the middle of a rolling Ocean...

Wonder how those Vietnamese did it in the eighties when they came over on Rafts

Yes they are, and very spacious, but if you pick the right sailing boat they are livable. Takes special kind I think and to have an affinity with water to live on one. And sailing aint no easy ride, especially when the elements are against you. So yes I would reside on a boat, as it presents a challenge. Plus the up keep of them can be expensive.

Say for instance if you have a mahogany hull, tis not suited to fresh water, better in salt water when it is moored up for a period of time. Much prefer a wooden hull and deck to fibreglass.wave cheers

as shakespeare said, "ahhh, there's the rub"...laugh ...a wooden hull presents itself to limits as well...they are'nt suited to warm waters...fiberglass is the way to go, IF you want to cruise the tropics...and to me, that's what it would be aboutdaydream

wooden boats are very pretty but DAMN, alotta work and upkeep...there's plenty of upkeep with a fiberglass hull...a wooden boat would be a nightmaremumbling laugh

oh yea, forgot to say...."there'de be the devil to pay"....do you know where that expression comes from ??...professor laugh it's a sailing term for wooden boats...to pay is to caulk...the devil is the keel beam....i don't want to do that EVER...uh oh laugh
