.....is a Magic Wand
Your forearm is transformed to cane...and your index finger becomes a strand of silk..

Then you learn about Trout..

"I learned about Trout from the Olde Drunk. When he could talk he spoke of Trout as though they were a precious and intelligent metal"
Richard Brautigan

Anyone know about The Fly Rod?

a beautiful and delicate tool, don't know much about them I'm afraid. Tried it once, almost caught a bat !

Have never caught a fish on a fly, just spinners or baited hooks. I would like to though, must give it a try again sometime.

My first posting many years ago was to RAF Boulmer in Northumberland, the local town was Alnwick.....Home to HARDY's the maker of some of the best Rods and Reels in the world.....I went out with a few local lasses over the 3 years I was there......The main employer in the town for young lasses was Hardy's......So I managed to accquire a very good set of equipment at very little costwink But over the years my brothers have "borrowed" the gear all I have left are 2 rods both 9.1/2 ft split cane and three reels all dating from 1973....Wonder if they are worth much......By the way Hardy's is still going strong and have a museum in the Town which is well worth a look for any angler who passes that way.....grin cheers

Only tried to cast once with fly rod.....it's an art for sure.

I prefer the normal coarse fishing though, rods, reels or poles.

patmac: Sadly can't sell them I promised my son he could have them many years ago....All the equipment is dated 71 onwards that's when I got to Boulmer......The rods are still in mint condition and the reels are pristine so my lad Andrew has a wee bonus coming his way....

Contact Hardy for a quote
I would guess the rods --'70s vintage Hardy cane rods are worth in the thousands of dollars in mint
If you can tell me model numbers I could guess at the reels
A quality single-action reel -like the Hardy Souvergne- would cost around $500.New.Old models more.
If you hane an old "Perfect" your son is very lucky indeed.
Note: DONT LET ANYONE FISH WITH THAT STUFF

A Presentation set of cane Salmon rods by Thomas&Thomas (Tom Dorsey) was crafted for HRH The Prince and Princess of Wales in the 70's
They were uniquely finished and inscribed.Works of art, certainly.
I suppose they would have to be considered priceless.
Of course The Royals would have better sense than to actually USE them....wouldn't they?
OMG ....Charley...no....no

Both reels are

1971 LRH MULTIPLIERS......don't mean a lot to me but I do remember Ally the last who got me them......She was a Rod tier (whatever that was) at Hardy's........Her Dad drove a van for the company.....Guess who got the Rods for me.....

Premium Salmon/saltwater reels
Several hundred dollars each.Perhaps a thousand
Your Lass affixed the guides to the rod blank with fine silk thread. The winding is called a "whip finish".With Hardy's high standard of quality-control the "whip" must be precisely done. The "tier" is a skilled craftsman. The "whip" or "wrap" is then coated with multiple applications of a natural resin-based varnish (not epoxy) to a deep glossy finish. As many as eight coats and each coat must be free of dust or lint--else the work is wasted, and the entire tie must come off and be re-done.The Master-Builder isn't going to like it either.
What are the line-classes(load range)of the rods. Probably eight or nine weight to match those reels?

By all means have them serviced and appraised by Hardy.
Do not let the lad fail to understand what he has.
One does not fish for coarse species with an outfit like these. It would be utterly foolish.Better he should sell them and buy his old Da something nice.
