Most of what I write seems to be going over many peoples head. Sorry I will make it simpler and reply without all the explanations so it is simple to understand.

Before the advent of modern pens, there was ink and quills, or something similar, and a typical students desk would have an "ink well". It was usually a hole in the wooden top of the desk, where you would place a container full of ink.

We didn't have the ink or quills, but did have the desks with the hole cut into them.
Shame really, I figured that would have been great fun.
Could have painted a happy face on the back of their neck, or dress.
I have no doubt strapping, or some other form of corporal punishment wuld have followed, but some of the things done, in the pursuit of love, are worth it. this evening I met a young lady for a drink and I invited ..

…pursuit of love… when you are 11 years old. The best romantic thing that ever happened to me was a boy carrying my school bag to my home. It certainly was unselfish at that age. Everything that happened after can’t possibly be comparable to that, can it?
the most romantic thing I ever did was to play the part of an ugly sister in cinderella when I was 11 so I could be near a girl I fancied from my sister's dance school - the girl was playing cinderella .. probably the most annoying thing I ever did was to get my brother roped in on the act to play the other ugly sister
