Faithfulness: I once went to Canada to visit friends also. I checked into moving to Canada. I checked into this back in 2003.. Back then, from what I understand you would need both a passport and a visa. You would need either an educational visa or a work visa...along with $9000 to get yourself set up in a place to live, find a job, etc.
I am sorry about your friend.
Wouldn't you only need a passport,drivers lic.,car registration,just to visit a person..
demonfairy: What if you had meet someone...been talking to them for weeks, was planning to meet them in another country...say the lady lived in the usa...the man in Canada....The time drew close for her to go visit him..he had said if they clicked he would like her to stay there...even checked to see how long she could stay on her passport...Then out of the blue he asked her if she had health care, which she didn't.He said the risk wasn't worth taking, what if she got sick while she was there...so the trip was called off,This happened to my friend...what do you think?
Id say if the only thing he cared about was the possibility of having to pay a medical bill, he's not worth a great deal.

Yes just for a visit.. and then only for a very short time.. When I went to visit my friends in Canada I went for two weeks.. and only have my passport..
In truth you don't even have to have a passport to visit across the border. This is a US requirement to be able to return to your home. Even with that said, I cross the border many times a year and have forgotten it and have had no real problem.

ladyfingers: I was looking this up online the other day. You can purchase health insurance if you are traveling to another country. She needed to research it. Personally, I think that he was having second thoughts and was giving her an excuse.
It certainly sounds like it.
Health insurance shouldn't even enter the picture if you are meeting/seeing someone

There is a gray area here between the US and Canada as regards crossing the border, due to an agreement made a while ago, so what is written down is not necessarily what is required.
You dont necessarily need a passport anyway, an enhanced driver's license will do just as well.

The requirement is there for entering the US, however as a citizen of that country you can not be denied entry. They can make that entry as difficult as they like and coupled with a bad attitude you could enjoy the hospitality of customs and immigration for many hours. I think 8 hours was my longest encounter argg
The thread question still is strange. If they talked for quite some time and she was going for an extended time I would think he they would have talked about money and how things would work so I lean towards last minute excuse to bail.
An emergency room visit before I had a health card cost me about 175 and that included x rays and a 4 day supply of IV antibiotics I took with so I could do them at home. So unless an air ambulance was involved, approx with doctor and nurse ( $7,000). It is not so bad price wise even if you pay cash.
One thing, and I am not looking to argue health care
Don't use the word urgent condition and wait times together. People get bypasses and any operation that is urgent without waiting those long months we hear about. I am saying nothing bad about US care but look up online and see how outcomes to medical conditions match up between the two countries. That is how you measure what works and does not
Faithfulness: free health care..but the doctors will say if you need like a pace maker, something urgent.. you need to wait 3 to 6 months..if not longer
Yes, we have "free" (everything actually does cost)health care. If urgent you get right away...if not available here..they send you to the States. Anyways, she wouldn't have been covered under our health care system. You have to be a resident. Why he turned her away, I don't know? One can always buy short term health care. Sounds like just an excuse to have her not come.
If I’m not mistaken since about a year all Canadians travelling to the USA need a valid Passport and vice versa, whether it be by air, land or sea. Before a Drivers License was sufficient but not anymore. I’m not sure about the Health Care System or Heath Insurance of Americans but as far as Canadians are concerned we are insured for 40 days with our Health Plan so if I travel for more than 40 days to the USA I usually get another insurance to cover my stay. Without this Insurance it can and will cost you a small fortune if ever you get seriously ill, in need of surgery or hospitalized in the USA. I’m not sure why this person would ask that someone visiting him be covered unless it’s for a long stay and even then why would he be responsible. I think your friend should ask more questions to get to the bottom of this.

Easy enough to give the gift of Blue Cross temporary insurance, if it was such an important concept for him?? LOL
