DUBLINGUY1973: Oh and i would abolish the role as president. Its pointless to have a president when all her or she does is attend functions and shake hands with people.
Absolutely, either give the president real powers or get rid of it, same goes with the seanad.
But since we do have one David would definately get my vote.
Mine too because i could see him actually doing something while in office. The last presidential election was a joke in my opinion because Mary McAleese won it uncontested. I just don't think she has really done anything apart from make the odd speech, shook a few hands and kissed a few babies.
I mean i'm not saying the president has to have full powers but they should at least be doing stuff thats good for the country like promoting the irish language or encouraging kids to read more etc. These are the types of things that need to be addressed and who better to do it than the president?

DUBLINGUY1973: Yes I do get a vote and i also am entitled to my opinion. Why am i a clown? Because i don't share the same opinion as you?
You're a clown because like a few other clowns here, apparently haven't a clue about the hugely important role the Presidency has. Maybe you would like a Gay in the aras - he could shake some other part of you anatomy instead of your hand then; IF that's what you think the Presidency is about ...... and to think brave men and women died for clowns like this ....shhheeeessshhh

you need to chill out and stop attacking people for posting their opinion....
and yes...I would like to see a "gay" in the Aras if he was a good leader that helped the country

Nobody asked those brave men and women to die for him, it was their choice.

Maybe you should read WHAT the President Actually does and what the President's precise roll is in our society.
"At home the President undertakes a wide range of engagements with particular emphasis on valuing the contribution of local community and self-help groups and in promoting peace and reconciliation throughout the island of Ireland. Whether participating in formal ceremonial, addressing international conferences or meeting people in a wide range of informal settings, the President is giving expression to the undertaking in the oath of office to "dedicate my abilities to the service and welfare of the people of Ireland".

have you any idea just how bigoted that sounds? The men and women you refer to, died for the freedom of our people....so that we could live in an independent democratic state..free of the imperial hold of the British. But it seems to me that whats really getting you here is your resistance to our society now becoming free of another form of imperialism...and that would be the influence and interference of the church...and I insist on specifiying this..the church as a political institution NOT the religion of Christ.

why do ye think he would make a good president, i havent seen much evidence to say he would make a good president, do people think because he is gay and very camp that he would make a good president
delamer: I admire the guy. He's very witty and intelligent. He would make a wonderful ambassador for the country.
I have no personal objection to 'gay marriage'.
I don't see anything wrong with Gay Marriage and think for all sorts of reasons it should be made legal asap, least of all for protection of children from within these unions.

I fail to see how, or in what capacity the Church has, in the Presidency. It's the people who elect the President, uninfluenced by ANY Religion - but I'm sure you enjoyed your pointless rant against the Church.
Someone else mentioned that President Mcaleese was elected 'unopposed' - they mustn't have remembered that Rosemary Scallan 'Dana' and another candidate whose name escapes me, but was a retired Garda, also ran for Office.
This thread was about a Gay being elected to the office of the President whose only function (as President) was to shake hands - so there is nothing bigoted at all in my comment that his preference may be to shake another part of one's anatomy.
The fact that there are those who don't understand or appreciate the importance and the role of the President merely exemplifies their own ignorance, which must bring into question the risk of allowing them a vote - if they don't know what they are voting for.
The Presidency is above politics, and President Macaleese has raised the Office to the highest standards possible in modern times. She is deserving of our respect, both as our President and as a person, who is honoured by every nation she has visited on our behalf. I doubt that Senator Norris will bring the same dignity.
tartini: Very well put!!! but am sure will not put this one to rest, controversy and dissagreement being top priority
that is untrue in my reasons for posting... I cannot stand rudeness and don't think it belongs in a public forum...also Dublin Guy is some whom I admire for his intelligence, he never judges or gets nasty...and he was called a clown!
My other reason is that I dislike McAlesee and would welcome Norris as president as he is intelligent and flamboyant and I think the country needs some colour at the moment...if he was voted in we would finally shed the "backwards" image we have with some of the world...
that is my reasons for posting....I hate arguing for the sake of being nasty and normally just enjoy some banter and craic but some comments made me respond
