I'm gonna get killed for posting this, but what the heck. My grandma and grandpa were married a whopping 77 years. I asked him once what it takes to stay married to the SAME woman that long. He replied "whipp em 6 months before you're married, 6 months after you're married and then all you do afterward is rattle the chain"rolling on the floor laughing He was joking of course, but I wonder how they stayed married THAT long? Surely obedience came into play somewhere

I would hope the real answer would be communication and compromise.

Actually in a "Hand Fasting" Ceremony that is what is done. The first is for a year. After a year it is renewed for 5 years and then 7 years, then 10 years and then it is a lifetime. If at any time the couples renewal comes up and they do not want to renew their vows they are under no obligation to do so. conversing conversing conversing

I was of the understanding that Hand Fasting is just another form of marriage, that didn't have to be redone.

According to the Merriam-Webster on-line dictionary, one of the definitions of obey is "to conform to or comply with". That, too, gives me a little heartburn. Why should two people have to conform? Isn't it the differences that attracted them in the first place? Compromise, yes! If I were to ever get married again (rolling on the floor laughing ) I would want my vows to read, in part "to support each other through the hard times, to cry with each other through the sad times and to spend the remaining time together rejoicing in each other's triumphants". Wait, that does sound a little corny, doesn't it?

In the most literal sense both will probably obey the other several times before they are done....

It comes down to in what situation, who knows more about it, and therefore takes the reigns.

In general life, however, I will bet a good LOVING couple wouldnt even have to concider this.

In my first marriage it was I am the husband and you will do as I say. I wear the pants in this family. She wore pants, too. That was very short lived. rolling on the floor laughing It gets lonely playing God. rolling on the floor laughing Then she got mad at her for wearing her pants. We were almost the same size.
rolling on the floor laughing In my second marriage to her it was exactly the opposite. Why can't you be the boss? rolling on the floor laughing Her complaint was that I didn't back her up. I thought she was doing just fine. rolling on the floor laughing Then she got real bossy. I begin to tell her that she wasn't my boss. The nobody was the boss because we had a wonderful divorce. grin

What if the husband is immature, erratic, and expresses himself in ways that are emotionally unsafe for the wife and children?

If he's acting that way what do you say the wife should do?

Sorry, jumped in again without reading further... Didn't see that this wasn't YOUR opinion...

confused

All this is making me wonder what we should put in our wedding vows next summer. At least we have a lot of time to think about it.

Curious. Why would you presume that "obedience" would have to come into play just because the marriage lasted a long time?
