Where do you see Ireland in 5 years? 10 years?
Where do you see Irelands economic future?
What about our children, their future? do they have one here?
Does Ireland have a future at all?

I have hard and tough views on the matter, but what are yours?

5years most likely a FG-Labour colaition having implemented brutal spending cuts combined with tax increases dicated by the EU/IMF. Coming out of recession with the Irish economy becoming an export dependent economy instead of been dependent on property.

10 years- We might have a proper centre right party in power in Ireland that is fiscally conservative.

I see many a parent in Ireland doing without food in order to keep their internet bill paid... so that they can keep in touch with their children abroad.

Hopefully by the 2016 general election we'll have a list electoral system and a complete reform of lcoal government.

Less country hospitals, greater incentive to work when the EU/IMF are finished, less semi stae companies.

A very small scaled down banking system

If we got our act together and played to our strengths with non-parochial gombeen mindsets we could have a thriving country in agriculture, arts, tourism, IT and renewable energy. But as usual we opt for the dole and drinking instead.

Yep it's just continual doom and gloom every day. In the papers, on the news, here. To be honest I don't know that many people that have been put out of a job during this recession and most people I know spending habits have only been moderately curbed.

Well, with the exception of myself!! Redundancy last month and a 7 month waiting list for statutory redundancy payments means I've had to put a few creditors on the long finger grin

People love to wallow in self pity at times.... I lost a fortune in property, having done little wrong...... Now I'm looking to setup a few new businesses with some friends, all of whom have the drive and skills required to make each of the successful. Fair play to you, and i hope your venture is a roaring success

Its one of the worst Irish cracter traits to wallow in victimhood, thankfully there are also plenty of people like JohnntT and yourself blarney who are looking to overcome adversity that will get this country moving again.

I've enjoyed a good standard of living all my life and will do everything i can to see that my kids enjoy the same chances in life, a good education, health to offer them the desire to do well for themselves... Its that simple really.... my drivers are selfish but that brings opportunity to others too

Having been brought up in a really depressed area during extremely depressed times - I can see mixed fortunes ahead for Ireland.
If the government can introduce decent support for enterpreneurial grass roots business then we may see stronger local business emerge in the next 2-5 years, surely it is better to encourage business than simply support families on welfare. God knows there are enough empty business parks to lease.
The O'Leary's and Smurfitts of this world need to be recognised as being necessary and vital to Ireland - they are only people left that the international economic world will even look at with a modicum of respect.
Do my kids have a future here? I'll evaluate that in 2 years time, before deciding whether to relocate before they get to junior school.
In the long term I think that Ireland will need to keep a grip on Keynesian economic style policy in its future.

Hopefully. The Auditor General did a report on Enterprise Ireland recently. Turned out that from 386 million they received in funding, just 48 million was given to businesses, the rest spent on admin. Being in their headquarters on Monday I can see why. It's plusher than AIB's headquarters in Ballsbridge. Madness. Though with the controversy over their spending last year, hopefully next will see more support given to business.

Well as a business person with almost 30 years under my belt I can tell you that the banks WONT be making loans available for small business, not in the short to medium term.
Credit to small business is definitely required, thats a taken cert, but it wont happen. Small business is the heart and soul and the major employers in this country and until they get going it will be very difficult for the country to come alive again.
I am glad to see people recognising that busisnessmen are required, the perception of wealth may be a reason for many to hate them, but you generally wont find the real business people flaunting their wealth.... yes the wannabee developers in the last decade in their flashy bling cars, sharp suits and an attitude of destain towards everyone, they did flash the cash they had BORROWED, but they are gone and good riddance to them, they never were busisnessmen in any shape or form, but the true entrepreneurs knew that in any case. The country will be better without them, never in our lifetime will credit be so easily dished out, and that is also good news.

So where do I see Ireland, slightly different to most here.
The IMF/ECB/UK have injected 70 billion into Ireland....... well folks 70 billion wont even begin to fill the hole !.... a multiple of 4 or 5 times that will be required !
So where does that leave us? Without question Ireland WILL DEFAULT in its debt repayment, not this year or probably not in 2011, but it will default..... certain of it.
10 years is a time frame that may see Ireland begin to build slight credibility on the financial markets again, but there will be a two tier Europe with regards to finance and we will be firmly fixed to the bottom tier.
We have 2 million people paying tax in some shape or form, that will decrease massively, small business VAT take will deplete, corporation tax will increase leading to companies relocating to another base worldwide, the future is not good.

It can be cured,
dissolve the Sheanead, dissolve FAS, dissolve the IDA, dissolve the army, dissolve the HSE, dissolve public sector by 60/70%, massive restructure of welfare and get this country back to work.....
But guess what, none has the stomach to do it, so we will paddle on with half an a paddle and a hole in the bottom of our boat.... but by that time all our educated and entrepreneurial young minds will be off to somewhere where they are valued.
Dire prediction?... I'm afraid it's where I see it.

But you should look on that as a good thing... Travel, gain experience abroad and return with real skill and experience to offer both an employer and yourself.... In the 80's My family had a good business.. I still left, went abroad and returned 4 years later... same conditions exist now... Its all about the way you percieve things
