Study leader Professor Arne Astrup from the University of Copenhagen said: "For many years we have been giving people in Europe the wrong advice about how to lose weight and avoid becoming obese.

"Calorie counting hasn't worked and may have made the problem worse because it didn't distinguish between different types of food.

"The new diet composition is much more effective at helping people maintain a healthy weight. It contains a slightly higher protein content and low GI foods, and you can eat as much as you want."

Sounds good you can eat what you want and still remain slim!!!!!

But is it to good to be true.

The Atkins diet is the most used and probably the most successful high protein diet. The Mayo clinic advises not to stay on one longer than a few months and to make sure your carbs are high fibre. Otherwise I haven't seen any studies where people have suffered being on one for periods of time.

I have done high protein diets myself and they were very successful in getting rid of large amounts of weight relatively quickly. Like all diets, however, they are best coupled with exercise for best effect.

You can eat as much protein as you like, but how they work is, high amounts of protein cuts your appetite naturally after the first week, and you find you are eating less and less, and so the calorie count is no bigger than any other diet of, say, 1000-1500 calories a day.wine

It just cant all be cake laugh

I like the low carb stuff and the paleolithic diet stuff cos it leaves out a whole raft of processed rubbish....

Theres no need to be hungry when you're doing these diets though, theres such a lot of choice - its mainly a case of healthy eating anyway, no refined stuff i.e. white flour or sugar etc. I loved the low GI diet cos I was actually eating more and the lbs were dropping off conversing

The natural no-calorie sweetener "stevea" is much better to use than artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.
And it's totally healthy.

It can totally replace sugar for most uses.

I believe care needs to be taken with stevia Ray, they arent altogether sure yet of potential side effects though it could be the white sugar companies have held back the research....

"Some scientists are concerned that stevia may be a mutagen, meaning that it could cause cancer. Stevia has also been linked to reproductive malfunction. Some of these studies have been imperfectly performed, but the need for more thorough analysis of the compound has certainly been demonstrated. Proponents of stevia suggest that these studies may be part of a larger effort on the part of sugar companies to keep alternatives to sugar off the market, pointing out that stevia is widely used in South America and Asia with no noticeable ill effects. Given the argument over stevia, it would appear that more controlled studies are needed."

In light of that Ill leave that stuff alone for now - I did some research into sugars when Dorielle first got poorly and found normal everyday white sugar to be more dangerous than some class B drugs....... I have a better link somewhere but blowed if I can find it...

I apologize, if you drink slim fast it will replace two meals a day and full bars help to control your hunger.

Why would anybody want to substitute good wholesome food with this packed with thumbs down sugar stuff?

Curious.

I doubt very much that it's a good advice, Lilly.

There are so many people out there whose weight causes them major health problems.

Reducing intake and counting calories worked for me...but I also am basically healthy and have good biochemical balances. I simply ate less for lunch and dinner and changed WHEN I ate. Two months and 20 lbs later it still works.

I know about what my lean body mass is so I only eat enough for that mass to live MINUS a little. The extra weight (fat) goes away...."eaten" up by the other body mass.

I plan to add excercise soon - back to weightlifting - and the added muscle will eat up more fat.....to a point.

Seems it is really as simple as that if you are willing to go through it.

Not eating later in the evening and eating until NOT hungry instead of eating until FULL makes a big difference.

If I'd give up sweet tea and soda I'd be ahead, but.....I gotta have SOMETHING leftlaugh

The goal is losing FAT not just loosing WEIGHT. Dead people continue to lose weight, but they are not so healthylaugh

It takes time to lose fat.....basically you have to burn up 3500 calories for each pound...and it WILL take time.

The problem with staying on a high protein diet for a long period of time is that it can cause the following problems:

1. Heart disease
2. Kidney damage
3. Constipation
4. Tumors and cancerous growths
5. Biochemical imbalances in the tissues (over-acidity)
6. Arthritis
7. Bone-loss (osteoporosis)

A person needs to consume a good amount and mix of low fat foods, grains, proteins and vitamins, which is why dietary specialists and nutritionists recommend a healthy balance of protein/fat/carb mixture and not just limiting the daily diet to high protein levels.

The extra protein the body does not need will be reabsorbed into the body and returns to the liver. In the liver the extra protein goes through a process called deamination, which means the amino acids are separated into nitrogenous and non-nitrogenous compounds. A steady consumption of more protein than the body needs means it is excreted into urea and makes extra work on the kidneys, which can lead to renal failure, arthritis and gout.

We have to watch what we put into our bodies, listen to our brain signals to tell us we are full and get more exercise. By losing weight slowly and using the proper diet, a person is much more likely to be able to maintain the weight loss for long term instead of losing it quickly and putting it back on when you go back to eating regular foods.
