The M1 will be salted so driving at 100 the whole way there would be no problem

CurvyGal20: This country isnt prepared for heavy snowfall

a few inches of snow disrupts everything

Scandanavian countries put up with weather worse than this for months on end

Difference is they are prepared for it

Their main roads are clear, side roads not really but they use Winter tyres on the cars and it makes a big difference.

They also have some kind of mains operated heater in the front of the car engine.

Last time I was there it was minus 30 celcius blues

Salt or no salt there's absolutely no way anyone should be driving at 100kph in this weather.

Salt only helps a little, if there's enough of it and it doesn't snow or freeze over it!.

doh

you just hit the nail on the head there, the council go out at half 2-3 in the morning to salt the roads and then it gets colder before dawn and the salt freezes again making the roads worse, its not even getting up the m1 thats the issue its getting onto the m1 thats my problem. tried to move my van earlier and even with its traction control all it did was spin with hardly any juice. the last thing i want to happen is for me to get stuck in dundalk and not able to get home uh oh

do you know what salt actually does??

Salt on the roads will melt the ice, making the roads less slippery. The icy water now freezes at perhaps -5 instead of 0oC. When there is salt. However there is a limit on lowering of the freezing point of water using salt. When temperatures are as low as -20 or -30 oC, putting salt on icy roads will no longer work. At these temperatures you now need to add a different chemical, Sodium Acetate.

Even if it snows over again it will melt

Salt will not freeze unless its -20 or 30

why do you think they spread salt on the roads in freezing

conditions in the first place?

Its not for a laugh or a joke

im repeating what was said by the AA on the radio earlier but sure what do they know like? think about it if you put water on your car in the morning its gonna freeze pretty much straight away so why wouldnt that happen on the roads? the salt helps providing theres enough of it but they dont always put enough down to cover every mm of the road so your still gonna have frozen parts no matter what

and further to that they dont always salt bothe sides of motorways/dual carraigeways so your still gonna have one side of the road frozen and will then have the muppets that want to drive at 100k trying to overtake the sensible people not risking their lives and then causing an accident.

personally i think anyone who is gonna drive that speed on a road that may have black ice on it in places is risking their life and those who are unfortunate enough to be around them when they crash
dunno

Yes I do know what salt does.

I also know that a shovel full of salt every few feet is not going to make a road safe to drive at 100kph on, especially when other cars/trucks/buses etc. have driven over it, scattered it and diluted it with slush etc.

Driving at 100kph in current conditions, salt or no salt, is reckless and irresponsible. In fact it is lethal!

It's a bit hit and miss alright.

How does salting work on already frozen roads without water in it's liquid state to dissolve it though?

Or does it work at all on already frozen roads?

Or does it just give a wee bit more traction on account of being a gritty substance anyway?

i dont know the ins and outs of it but from a physics point of view the salt will attract moisture from the ice thus defrosting it or slowing the freezing process. if you think of putting salt on slugs they die by osmosis where the water in their bodies is drawn out by the salt concentration outside their body. same happens with us when we get thirsty its a build up of salt in our cells and we need liquid to fix the balance. now thats what i remember from doing physics 10 years ago so i may be a bit off the mark but i think its the generaly jist of it dunno
