70Libra: It's a bit hit and miss alright.

How does salting work on already frozen roads without water in it's liquid state to dissolve it though?

Or does it work at all on already frozen roads?

Or does it just give a wee bit more traction on account of being a gritty substance anyway?

They put salt out before freezing conditions are expected and

everday throughout the freeze they throw out more salt to top it up.

Wont give you any more traction, just prevents water freezing so

its like driving in wet conditions

People just need to slow down

wexlady41: Yes I do know what salt does.

I also know that a shovel full of salt every few feet is not going to make a road safe to drive at 100kph on, especially when other cars/trucks/buses etc. have driven over it, scattered it and diluted it with slush etc.

Driving at 100kph in current conditions, salt or no salt, is reckless and irresponsible. In fact it is lethal!

And roads are not salted by shovel

They are salted by a truck with a spreader at the back

It gives good coverage

They are restricted to 100kmph = 60mph

They are supposed to drive no faster than 80km/h on secondary routes

Maybe in some places. I've only ever seen roads being salted by shovel.... here and in other places, including Dublin.

Why are you arguing with me over driving speed and salt?

People who drive too fast cause accidents. In snowy and icy conditions driving at even half the speed limit can still be fatal. I really don't see how you can defend driving at 100kph in the current conditions.

dunno dunno

You just dont get it. . .100kph is lethal on ANY road in these conditions, a 120kph limit is NOT an invitation to drive to that limit. If you hit a patch that has frozen in the shade or missed getting salt you ve no control over where your car ends up. And what if you come up too quickly behind a vehicle moving more slowly than you and get a wobble at that speed changing lanes. The faster you go the more damage you do both to yourself and others

my bad so dunno still wouldnt want to be on the roads with them regardless. it doesnt matter how good a driver you are or how well you can control your car its those that cant that cause the problems and i personally would rather miss college then drive the 90k and risk crashing but thats just me, maybe i need to be brave like you and drive 100k on the m1 in the snow roll eyes

No actually Salanky is right!!

Trucks are by law supposed to have speed restrictors which restrict them to 55mph (or whatever that is in kph). It's illegal not to use the restricors. So if trucks are driving at 100kph they should be reported.

I drive at 100km/h on the M1 anyday I drive on it

and most days I am tailgated by some truck who tries to overtake

but cannot because they are restricted to 100kph

Maybe the speed is 90kph (55mph) but they can pick up speed going

down slopes especially on a motorway

The Regulations implement Directive 2002/85/EC on the installation and use of speed limiters in motor vehicles.

Under the Regulations, speed limiters must be set so that goods vehicles cannot exceed 90 km/h and passenger-carrying vehicles 100 km/h. However, the maximum speed limits applicable to these vehicles are lower than these values: HGVs and single deck buses are subject to a maximum speed limit of 80 km/h with double-deck buses subject to a maximum speed limit of 65 km/h.

It is an offence to use a vehicle (as described above) in contravention of the Regulations. Both the driver and the owner of the vehicle found to be in breach of the Regulations face a fine of up to €3,000 or a prison term of up to 3 months or both.

Taken from Department of Transport regulations.
