DUBLINGUY1973: I think he was an opportunist like Bertie but i doubt he saw the crash coming either. They all seemed to have been clueless about as far as i can see. Charlie saw a better job coming up in Europe with a bigger expense account and more money so he took it
oh the thing is charlie will pay, i hear he owes millionslaugh

I've read this whole thread and frankly I'm sickened that there is pity/sympathy for Brian Cowen. I actually feel quite ill reading some of the posts.

Brian Cowen is a very well paid statesman that did nothing for this country but ruin it through his arrogance and ignorance.

He was minister for finance and he was asleep on the job, for years.

I really and truly wish nothing but contempt for the whole shower of FF and their supporters. I'm furious.

No wonder the country is in the state it's in when sheeple rewrite history and believe a word out of any politicians mouth.

very mad

jimbo79: bertie the man with no bank account he changed politics in ireland though he spoke to the media daily , he was all spin, he made it all about him, he did good work up north but that aside he was an utter failure

cowen by all accounts is a decent man, and while i think all his major decisions were the wrong ones, im sure he did them for what he believed were the right reasons, sad thing is i doubt enda kenny would have done any different, after the 06 budget he said that cowen should have given more

No he is not a decent man. very mad

DUBLINGUY1973: Yeah Bertie was a good communicator, Cowen isn't. Thats his problem. If he knew how to talk to people, i don't think he would be as popular as he is.

I do feel sorry for Cowen in a way because I'm sure his wife and family are getting awful stick and the stress on him must be terrible. I'm sure he did make these decisions because he thought it was right but having said that, he does come across as arrogant in that he never seems to admit when he is wrong. I also think it was his job as minister for finance to liase with the financial regulator and keep an eye on the banks. He obviously didn't.

He's probably a decent guy but obviously doesn't have a clue what he is doing. As jimbo said, from a humane point of view, i do feel sorry for him in a way. I wouldn't want the job at the moment.

As for Bertie, he seems to be a cute hoor but i doubt he even saw this coming. He's not smart. I reckon the timing was just convenient because all the skeletons in his closet (the brown envelopes saga) happened at the time. I really don't think he had the foresight to get out at the right time. If the mahon tribunal had never come to light, he would probably be still Taoiseach.

As for Dev, while he hung Michael Collins out to dry with the treaty, i think he was a good leader. We need someone like that again.

And don't forget this little nugget, I'm surprised at you DG!mumbling

jimbo79: i think on a personal level i have pity for him, his legacy is in ruins, his politics disgust me as do the politics of fine gael and labour, let's not forget there part in this, and also the people have to take some of the blame they voted them in 3 times in a row.

Politics in this country needs to change big time. The whole shower are a disgrace. Have any of you signed or checked out Fintan O'Toole's website. confused

Jimbo are you serious? He has been caught lying loads of times in a handful of months, do you not remember the weekend of the IMF/ECB Loan (I refused to call it a bailout)? He nearly need a gun to his head to say yesterday in the Dail about who exactly had dinner with that night.

His intentions for the blanket guarantee where not to protect the country it was to protect his vested interests.

However I feel I should not have to elaborate. wow

i have looked at it but wouldn't sign, i have an issue with the list system, i was initially in favour of it, but after thinking on it, i don't think i want anyone in the dail that doesn't have a direct mandate from the people, it would be just like the hse no accountability

The way things are we need a serious change in the Dail. I actually think the 'direct mandate' isn't good for this country as it leads to parish pump politics. To take an example of planning permission and how a local politician will try and pull a few strings and then the person is all happy with that politician and they vote for them - that is an insane system. It does not service the people well and we are left with eye sores of houses and/or housing estate that should never have been built - do you get me. That is only one example but there are loads... it's wrong and indecent.

I don't have all the answer but our current system has failed and we need to find a system that works.

Oh i don't deny he brought all of this on himself through his negligence/incompetence and I want to see him out of power as soon as possible. I'm sure a lot of people would have him burned at the stake but that to me that would be futile. Just get out of power and then sort out the mess because he's obviously incapable of doing it himself.

I don't know him personally so i don't know what he is like as a person. Maybe he is a nice guy. As a politician and Taoiseach though, he's clueless.

Bearing in mind that dickhead Bertie resigned and that he was pushed into the position ... he was Minister for Finance during the heyday ... but that was a shared responsibility .... he was not the only git in power ...
