Agreed. Even a new party in power would have problems getting changes, due to all the vested interests protecting their corner at the expense of everyone else. No matter how stupid their stance is.

after watching the interview he was almost in tears at the end he seems a broken man on a personal level you would have to feel a certain amount pity for him

Well, to quote John Major, and he was referring to Gordon Brown from his own experience, when the electorate start to pity you, you're finished!conversing

But the question in the Dail yesterday when he was asked about who else was present at Druid's Glen, holed him below the waterline. You could see it in his face!

Jaysus, I'm starting to feel sorry for him myself!uh oh

Why feel pity? He put himself in this position. He should know from all his years in politics that he should be more careful what he does as it will always be scrutinised.

abitunlucky: One thing you have to admire about Bertie is his sense of timing. He got out at just the right moment. Did he know something no one else did. Well except those of us who had our eyes wide open at the time.
yes he timed it well the ratlaugh what worries me now is we have the prospest of enda for 5 yearscrying

I have a feeling that unless FG & Labour get a massive majority we may be in for a period of electoral instability. So Enda in power for 5 years may not be a foregone conclusion.

But even if Enda is in power could he be any worse than Cowen, Bertie et al.

Whoever comes in, can do anything unpleasant they want and blame Europe and the IMF for it now! My only hope is that with Labour in coilition, we may get a bit of social justice!uh oh

Godsgift: Bertie was a rogue who believed people only existed to serve his purposes and who had no conscience whatsoever! If Bertie had been caught sharing a bed with Sean Quinn, he would have laughed it off without a care.

But Brian Cowen, from what everyone says, seems to be a thouroughly decent man and that's why he's so badly hurt. Although I disagree with just about every decision he's made since coming into office from the Lisbon Treaty, through the Bank bail out, the Croake Park agreement and now this latest debacle, I believe he made these decisions because he believed they were right and not for personal gain!

I believe the country should have been put first last year before the IMF arrived by holding an election to give us continuity of government for the 5 year plan!

Sadly, I think history is not going to look on him too kindly. He'll be seen as selling off your independance.....And now the French and Germans are gunning for the corporation tax!

We need a leader with balls and we need him now! (Or whatever the female equivilent is.....having said that, I'm sure Maggie had a pair!)
bertie the man with no bank accountlaugh he changed politics in ireland though he spoke to the media daily , he was all spin, he made it all about him, he did good work up north but that aside he was an utter failure

cowen by all accounts is a decent man, and while i think all his major decisions were the wrong ones, im sure he did them for what he believed were the right reasons, sad thing is i doubt enda kenny would have done any different, after the 06 budget he said that cowen should have given moredoh

From the little I know about Devalera, I don't think I would have liked him, but I'm fairly sure he wouldn't have been bullied by Europe! We need someone like that!

Yeah Bertie was a good communicator, Cowen isn't. Thats his problem. If he knew how to talk to people, i don't think he would be as popular as he is.

I do feel sorry for Cowen in a way because I'm sure his wife and family are getting awful stick and the stress on him must be terrible. I'm sure he did make these decisions because he thought it was right but having said that, he does come across as arrogant in that he never seems to admit when he is wrong. I also think it was his job as minister for finance to liase with the financial regulator and keep an eye on the banks. He obviously didn't.

He's probably a decent guy but obviously doesn't have a clue what he is doing. As jimbo said, from a humane point of view, i do feel sorry for him in a way. I wouldn't want the job at the moment.

As for Bertie, he seems to be a cute hoor but i doubt he even saw this coming. He's not smart. I reckon the timing was just convenient because all the skeletons in his closet (the brown envelopes saga) happened at the time. I really don't think he had the foresight to get out at the right time. If the mahon tribunal had never come to light, he would probably be still Taoiseach.

As for Dev, while he hung Michael Collins out to dry with the treaty, i think he was a good leader. We need someone like that again.

I think he was an opportunist like Bertie but i doubt he saw the crash coming either. They all seemed to have been clueless about as far as i can see. Charlie saw a better job coming up in Europe with a bigger expense account and more money so he took it laugh

He'll never go until he's pushed. He's too arrogant and thinks he's still doing a good job and can turn things around. roll eyes
