Having been on the net for around 15 years I have tried many forms of comunication. ICQ, Yahoo, MSN and a few others.
I still run MSN as I keep in touch with my family members that are scxattered all over the place.

Yes I have a home phone but hardy use it.
Mobile as well.

My prefued way is a good food and many freinds around and just chatting face to face.
I know some that hide behind the net to feel safe.

But is it a substute for the real thing?

Yes, face to face is the best.
But living in Wonthaggi means distance precludes a regular meet up so skype video conferencing from pc to pc is the next best thing and it's free which is even better.
I preffer to skype dates too so that the person behind the voice actually is the person in the profile picture.
You also get to see them laugh, smile and do other fun things lol.

No way. Nothing beats the real thing. In my opinion.

I think you have to be careful of the net. It can drag you into an unrealistic world. You have to remember to get out and smell the roses. thumbs up

Like you Oldb, I like to keep in touch with family and friends via msn etc. Face to face would be better but it's not always possible obviously conversing

I only have a mobile and I use it more for txt msgs than calls, there's always the work phone for anything more lengthy laugh

The thing I like about net communication is that you can do it anytime anywhere, in your pjs or whatever, or even at times when you just don't feel like going out to meet people.

I wouldn't call that type of thing hiding, just convenient wine

yeah I have been around on the net for quite some time too and I use the net to keep in touch with friends and family either via email, yahoo messenger, facebook and here in the forums but I definitely do not hide behind the net to feel safe.

I too have a home phone which I mainly use to call businesses and make interstate calls to family and friends, use my mobile mainly to text and call my boys and make work calls which I claim on tax.

As for a preferred way.. definitely like to catch up with friends and family face to face.. but not all the time.. sometimes I like to not have to worry about how I look or to get dressed cos someone is coming over laugh and sometimes I get anti-social and just want to be in my own company , not with others but I still like to have a chat if that makes sense so the net and the phone fits that need perfectly

I don't hide on the net. But its the easiest and cheapest way for me to communicate with people.
If I want to make a playdate with one of my mummy friends then all I have to is jump on facebook and send a private message.
Which is basically free, just uses a little bit of data from my phone. I don't have a landline and hardly ever recharge my phone so its cheaper and easier this way.
I 've actually made friends I see in person because of the net. Its a great friendship tool.
Its hard for me to get out and meet people though. I have two kids and I'm pregnant, I have very little family support so no time to myself so if I don't jump online and chat to some of my mummy friends it can get very lonely. Most are interstate or out of Sydney, the ones who are actually close enough to visit we all have conflicting schedules, between playgroups and their part time work and then married friends wanting family time on the weekends with their partners, as a single mum it hardly leaves much time to catch up for a playdate. People seem very busy these days and facebook for example is a great way to chat to people when we have those few spare minutes.
I don't see online communication to be a bad thing at all. Yes, in person is always better but not always possible or accessible.

to get to know someone, face to face, for me is the only way, with the net our imagination has too much influence and tends to build things that are maybe not there.

I use MSN to keep in contact with friends all over the world, yahoo at times as well. I use facebook to share photos etc.

I can be a bit of a homebody at times so the net is great as unless you turn the webcam on you can be in whatever state you like to chat!wink

I have both home phone and mobile but tend to use them only when needed, I still dont like talking on phones!

for me the net is no substitute for being with people, but it is a viable means of communication through which I have met some fantastic peopleconversing

Tis ok
Yes the meeting of people seem to be the best way of comunicationg.
And I fully understand why we use the net more than the phone.
I am NOT saying that most of us hide behind it at all.
I get on at all hours. And there is someone to talk to.
But when you ring them at all hours nthey seem cheesed off that you got them out of bed or other positions.

I am not good with communication it seems, for I am often misjudged, and then instead of defending myself, the hateful ones get the applause and I just sit here taking it...
