Pregnancy After Age 35, Is It Safe?
While advances in medical care can help women over age 35 have safer pregnancies than in the past, infertility and pregnancy complications for this age group are higher than for younger women. If you have decided to delay having a child, you should understand the risks associated with this so you can take precautions to minimize risks and improve your chances for a healthy pregnancy and child.

Pregnancy After Age 35, Does the Risk Birth Defects Increase?
The risk of giving birth to a child with a birth defect does increase as the mother's age increases. This is probably due to abnormal division of the egg, called nondisjunction. This leads to unequal chromosomes at the end of division. The traditional age at which a woman is considered to be at high risk for chromosomal abnormalities is 35. Approximately 1 in 1,400 babies born from women in their 20's have Down syndrome; it increases to about 1 in 100 babies born with Down syndrome from women in their 40s.

Pregnancy After Age 35, Will the Risk of Miscarriage Increase?
Studies show that the risk of miscarriage (loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks gestation) is 12% to 15% for women in their 20s and rises to about 25% for women at age 40. The increased incidence of chromosomal abnormalities contributes to this increased risk of miscarriage in older women

I hope this helps.

hi to you, from another Canadian...left the homeland years ago, but still pretty patriotic. i had my son when i was 33, and my daughter exactly 9 and a half years ago, when i was 40 and a half...i kept pushing my "if i'm not pregnant by then, i'm getting fixxed" date up till she actually planted herself in there. i turned 40 with no aging dramas at all - impossible to feel old with a miracle in your belly! and now i'm fifty with a gorgeous girl of almost 10...i think things may get tricky when i'm sixty and she's twenty, but for now i can only say: if age is your only worry, go for it!

I had my son at 36 1/2 and my husband was 21 yrs older than me. No mental or physical birth defects whatsoever but he took everything out of me during his developement.

9 months of intense vomiting with losing 18 pounds in the first month, being hospitalized from dehydration. And finally an emergency C-section at a full 9 month term for a 9 lb, 11 ounce boy cuz he was being strangled by the umbilical cord and was losing his heartbeat.

Today, he is a terrific 21 yr old guy at 6 feet 6 inches tall. I have no regrets going through 9 months of vomiting although I never did it a second time.

Doc said it is not uncommon for a healhy growing baby to take all the nutrients out of a mother's system early on and throughot the pregnacny and tear her body down to the extreme. Like what occurred to me. But she said that the baby usually comes out very healthy which was the case for me.

His friend's mom was 41 when she gave birth for the first time. The kid was super brilliant and went to Montosouri schools. No birth defects either.

So if it is a chance of a lifetime to make your dream come true with a child, do go for it and don't look back. Even with 9 months of intense vomiting, you may still come out with that bundle of joyteddybear applause

Over 40 seems to be when to worry of health issues for mother and child, including down syndrome ( they are some of the sweetest people you will meet. ).

Loosing any excess weight on your stomach will really increase your chances of pregnancy.

I had my first at 18 and my last at 37 had a few others in-between those two. I found that having a baby at an older age was awesome! But then she was so easy, she slept most of her babyhood away! I went back to work when she was ten days old she went part time with me and then during lunch I took her to the babysitters. It was a great time. I work for the courthouse, so she was dubbed 'the courthouse baby'. Everyone came over to see her. I had no problems with my pregnancy, but they watched me closely. Now she is 13 years old...enough said! Gotta love her though teddybear
