doberman3: Hello Aussie, just join in the band wagon.
Does anyone else have a problem with another country? Speak up now or leave it.
I find it very interesting that the basis of this thread is about the US. How the original author of this theory thinks that England and the US don't get along. Then we find out much later on in the thread that author was English.
Then we get into the problems that Ireland had. Which for the record, I thought was just a famine. I had no idea that England was getting food that Ireland needed. That was not in my history book. It makes me ill to find that out.
SO I have learned something at least.
But I do not understand why the OP did not source the poster as being English if he knew.
To me, that is starting a thread up just to push buttons.

Hi Dobe ,Knew you wouldn't stay away, and thank goodnes for that.
With regards the famine in Ireland yes it was originally started by the potato crop failing, but was not helped by the high handed government in England, hence the "bashing"
I can understand people getting angry, but to blame a nation for a Government's mishandling of the situation is taking it out of context.
You should try and read Joseph O'Connor's "Star of the sea" A block busting best seller which won many awards. It's based on the Irish famine and although not an easy read is fascinating reading. It wasn't all down to the English.
optomistic68: What difference does it make to the debate what the nationality of the OP is?
Why would it not make a difference? Doesn't it help to know the nationality of the person who made the statement? I think it does.
Maybe the poster who was so unhappy about England could try to do his part to help out with his country. One person's contribution to their society can make things better with this economy. Maybe volunteer at a charity shop, etc. Make a difference, not just complain.
In the US, people are suffering everywhere, losing their jobs, homes. We are also having tornados, killing 231 people or so. Plus, flooding.
Also, Optomistic:
"For all the talk of special relationship I believe that a lot of Americans do not like the English. The relationship by the way is mainly between Wall Streetheart wings and heart wings The City of London. The ordinary American and English person are not considered in the heart wings special relationship."
Can you explain what made your mind up about that statement? That normal Americans and English do not like each other?
Haven't you noticed how the English and Americans do get along here in the forums for example. I'd say the majority of my friends here are English, Spain, or the Kiwi's.
I have some English blood in me. Also Cherokee.
But, all we can do is try to do better than in the past and try to unite instead of fight.

An Gorta Mor ( The Great Hunger) We are the Silent People. How long must we be still, To nurse in secret at our breast An ancient culture?
Let us arise and cry then; Call from the sleeping ashes Of destiny a chieftain who Will be our voice.
He will strike the brass And we will erupt From our hidden caves Into the light of new-born day.
From 1845, when Ireland's potato crop partially failed, to 1847, when starvation and disease rose to dramatic levels, to 1852, when the economy and population was just getting back on its feet, the Irish were the Silent People. The "Great Hunger", known as An Gorta Mor in Gaelic, happened in an era when millions of people knew only famine, oppression, and degradation. The potato famine itself was a "natural" disaster such as a flood or an earthquake, and there is no way to predict when such an event will happen. A fungus known as "phytophthora infestans" caused the blight itself. But to be prepared for such an event and to deal with it in a correct and timely fashion is the important issue. The English, the ruling body in all of Ireland at the time, did not remedy the situation, nor did they care to. In fact, they seemed to do the opposite.
But why look back and blame "The English"??
We have come a long way and struggled sure but "Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else, you are the one who gets burned"
I have a great Intrest in "An Gorta Mor" but to hold on to Anger is bad very BAD

This is an example of why wars start. Someone steals something of yours!
The DOBE
Damn good thing Virginia is so far away from CT. If France and England were as far apart as our two states are, those chaps might not have been fussing with each other all those centuries.

Other countries are what made America great. Being the frontrunner isn't much of an accomplishment if you're the only one in the race.
