bestbefore: Hi Dobe ,Knew you wouldn't stay away, and thank goodnes for that.
With regards the famine in Ireland yes it was originally started by the potato crop failing, but was not helped by the high handed government in England, hence the "bashing"
I can understand people getting angry, but to blame a nation for a Government's mishandling of the situation is taking it out of context.
You should try and read Joseph O'Connor's "Star of the sea" A block busting best seller which won many awards. It's based on the Irish famine and although not an easy read is fascinating reading. It wasn't all down to the English.
Hi best, you're right, couldn't do it. I was trying but glad to be back.
I always enjoy your posts. Thanks for the info. I am interested in history, all over, not just the US. I will check out "Star of the Sea". Thank you.

Nuliiiiiii: An Gorta Mor ( The Great Hunger) We are the Silent People. How long must we be still, To nurse in secret at our breast An ancient culture?
Let us arise and cry then; Call from the sleeping ashes Of destiny a chieftain who Will be our voice.
He will strike the brass And we will erupt From our hidden caves Into the light of new-born day. From 1845, when Ireland's potato crop partially failed, to 1847, when starvation and disease rose to dramatic levels, to 1852, when the economy and population was just getting back on its feet, the Irish were the Silent People. The "Great Hunger", known as An Gorta Mor in Gaelic, happened in an era when millions of people knew only famine, oppression, and degradation. The potato famine itself was a "natural" disaster such as a flood or an earthquake, and there is no way to predict when such an event will happen. A fungus known as "phytophthora infestans" caused the blight itself. But to be prepared for such an event and to deal with it in a correct and timely fashion is the important issue. The English, the ruling body in all of Ireland at the time, did not remedy the situation, nor did they care to. In fact, they seemed to do the opposite. But why look back and blame "The English"??
We have come a long way and struggled sure but "Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else, you are the one who gets burned"
I have a great Intrest in "An Gorta Mor" but to hold on to Anger is bad very BAD
Eloquently spoken my friend. History tells a story that some would rather not know about. As I said before a Nation cannot be held responsible for it's Government and the bad decisions made.

Same applies to this day and age really.
When a Nations People are told Lies and do not react then the People are to blame.
gardenhackle: Damn good thing Virginia is so far away from CT. If France and England were as far apart as our two states are, those chaps might not have been fussing with each other all those centuries.
OK... here's your thread back.
Hey, there old chap, what's this about Virginia and CT being so far apart, are you telling me you miss me and want to kiss me?

Anyone can become angry. That is easy. But to be angry with the RIGHT person, to the RIGHT degree, at the RIGHT time, for the RIGHT purpose and in the RIGHT way... that is not easy.
