blarneykite: Hate to tell you mate, but there was NO FAMINE in Ireland, There was however a Potato Blight that ruined the potato crop and as such the staple diet of the Irish people. During the years of the "FAMINE" there was food a plenty in Ireland... being exported by the land owners and co. That in effect makes what happened more akin to genocide... When they said to connaught or to hell, it meant the same thing
I read the start of your post and I thought No Famine in Ireland and I am glad I finished reading it other wise you and I would have a flaming row...
blarneykite: OH SO TRUE, thankfully the majority of us have learned the lessons of history and left it where it belongs.... In the past.... The now and the future is what matters

I must chill out
It's amazing just how many people don't know their own history

Ah connaught aint that bad B when you get used to living here
bestbefore: Oh rizlared, some people just love raking over the past. The antagonists will continue to bash each other as to who did what to whom!
In the light of the world today with country's collapsing everywhere, wouldn't you think their time would be better spent uniting not fighting.
Exactly, We have all the resources and opportunities to make the whole world a better place, but so many just want to rake over the coals and keep the fires burning, but with politics and religion mixed with fanatics and hard liners, the rest of the world has no chance.
I completely agree that it was a terrible thing to do by the British Whig Government, and was no doubt an attempt to "deal" with the Irish. It is a part of English History that makes my English side ashamed and my Irish side seething. It was heart-wrenching, to read accounts of Irish people losing families, their homes, their livelihoods, in the most terrible ways. They were forced onto land in the West of Ireland that was good for nothing; impossible to grow anything on and bitterly exposed to the Atlantic weather. "Connaught or Hell", indeed...
I have read extensively on this subject as I am very interested in the histories of all countries, and my own in particular.
However, some good did come out of it. Many Irish were forced to emmigrate to the USA, and eventually were able to bring the rest of their families over and start new, prosperous lives. Even before that point, they were able to send "Letters from America" - correspondence containing some funds to send back to their loved ones in Ireland.
The famine also galvanised the Irish people into fighting, and winning their Free Ireland. Although the Isle of Ireland is still indeed split, the South was at least able to eventually create their own homeland.
The histories of England, Ireland and the USA are forever intertwined; rarely does one country's events not touch the other over the centuries. Which is exactly why I believe there is, and always will be a "Special Relationship"; not just between 2 countries but aill 3.

I see you as the antagonist
You insult the irish by saying its "raking over old coals"
Bodecia: Ok, my Two-Penneth on the Irish Famine issue.

While it is important to remember our history and what ancestors went through, making us the nation we are to day, not all good sadly. Whats done is done and there is no benefit in constantly bringing it up.
This is ridiculous and pointless..There is not one country that has not done wrong to others be they the natives of that country or when trying to take over another...

Howard Zinn RIP just before he died basically wrote a truer version of American and I believe that it will enter the American Colleges
Its a little more complicated than one thinks so the debate has to take place.
Holy Schwartenmagen!
