Basically if your present BF-GF is only going out with you because their 1st choice turned them down flat.....and they took the only option open..Which happened to be you. And you found out...that they secretly still pined for their 1st choice...

I suppose it happens often and people rarely find out and believe they are the first choice. I think it would depend how special our relationship is as to whether I would give him the kick up the jacksee or not. Also whether his first choice and him had a chance of getting back together or not. It really just depends on the situation.

Wow_Factor: That bloke you know seems to have been a bit obsessed with holding a candle to someone who is that flippant. I think he shouldn't think the situation with his present girlfriend is second-best as they may well make it work and she may be a more viable long-term proposition as it were than someone who would keep the guy at arm's length. Tell your friend to chill and I hope this or any other relationship works out for him as he needs to come-down to earth and realise that you cannot make a person like or love you - if the feeling is not reciprocated by the other person the relationship cannot get started.
Hi Wow, if I may cut in here as its not my thread.
IMO the man thought that there was a chance I do wonder why? he must have had some indication. However glad that he took off the rose coloured specs and moved on.
People have a huge capacity for love and for patience if they are given a light of hope.
I am so pleased the man found someone in life that he can love and be happy with.

Well he may have mistaken her natural friendliness or perhaps the way she looked at him as a come-on. Or he may have had an intense crush. I think we have all been there and done that. Or it could be something else entirely but I hope he finds happiness in another relationship. I suppose when we think of how we (I use the metaphorical we) have made mistakes with relationships, or even before the relationship gets going we can all laugh although it was hard at the time.

Again apologies for cutting in here as this is not my thread Wow.

I see where you are coming from. I do not see the point though in putting anyone down for having the thoughts that a particular person may have been the right one. I would think that when he eventually seen the ligth he moved on. To say that he is with the only one that would take him is harsh in my opinion only. Surely as humans and having free will can make decisions. If two people decide to make a go of it, then damn well good luck to them.

I'm not sure if this relates, but I like to think I have patience and I did spend a long time in an "on/off" relationship, but it WAS reciprocated. If I had been rejected and told we could only be friends, then I would have...saved a fortune in airfares!! Of course I would be hurt, but like many situations, I'd get over it eventually. But I for one, will be far more careful in future.

Apologies again for cutting in, as this is not my thread Brum.

Yes I would agree, that the man has moved on and good luck to him. He has the right to be happy and to be loved. I do not know that the man was not encouraged in anyway to keep the hope open for as long as he did. However, he saw the light and moved on.

Or like I said..He'd never a chance with his 1st choice and settled for 2nd or 3rd...

I do not wear Rose Coloured Specs Phoenix.
Humans behaviour is something that I cannot comment on, just that we are all different.
We can say things on behalf of others and that is not necessarily the case. We hear what we are told, and is it true? There are always 2 sides to a story.
I still say good luck to the Man and glad that he found happiness.
I would not have any complaints whether it be 1st, 2nd or as I said already 20th as long as one finds what is compatible.

Neither do I (we both know someone who doesgrin )...As for never or not commenting on human behaviour yes you do (more often than you think)...

What if (very big what if<----basically a no)..His n° 1 choice had a change of heart and decided to give it go...That mean someone would loose..probably his n° 2-3 or 20th choice....

Sometimes the one that got away is not the best, and your friend may have only thought she would be the best, and the one that has accepted is. Who knows? The second or third choice may well be a keeper and someone to treasure.
