I never knew there was such a thing as someone born without fingerprints. I've heard of criminals having their fingerprints removed but born without any?? This is quite a predicament to be in if you are a worldwide traveler. Guess the scanning devices for the eyes will be more accurate. The eyes can't lie, only the color can change with contact lens. The eyes are a different type of fingerprint of sorts. What are your thoughts on the fingerprint issue?
An Israeli scientist at Tel Aviv University has discovered the rare genetic mutation that causes one to be born without fingerprints. By Chana Ya'ar First Publish: 9/20/2011, 2:16 AM Ha'retz News
An Israeli scientist at Tel Aviv University has discovered the cause of a rare disease in which some babies are born without fingerprints, and a reduction in the number of sweat glands.
The condition, adermatoglypia – “Immigration Delay Disease” – is extremely rare, but can make life miserable for the people who have it.
According to Professor Eli Sprecher, at TAU's Sackler Faculty of Medicine and the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, only four documented families have been affected by the genetic mutation in the entire world. The condition, although a nuisance, is not life-threatening.
Sprecher's research, carried out in collaboration with Dr. Janna Nousbeck of the Souasky Center, and Prof. Peter Itin of the University Hospital at Basel, Switzerland, has been published in the American Journal of Human Genetics.
The lack of a single protein, says Sprecher, is to blame for “Immigration Delay Disease” so named because those who are affected have so much trouble passing through border control and security checkpoints – where fingerprint identification is required.
Police and other government authorities as well as many corporations rely on fingerprints as absolute identity markers. Even the airports use them.
In fact, the condition was first discovered when a Swiss woman was asked to provide her fingerprints upon entry to the United States, and she informed authorities she could not comply. Nine of her family members are affected by the condition.

Would not having a finger print in a way ...be a fingerprint?

What if a person has not finger-prints and no eyes?
I have had some problems with my finger prints, I have been required to use the index finger besides the thumb to enter some places with safety measures implemented (trading center for commodities).

Interesting article, thanks!
I had heard of people born without fingerprints but this is the first time I've seen anyone figure out why. I believe it would be quite a challenge to securitywise identify someone without fingerprints or eyes. You are correct because people are actually born without any eyes and artificial glass eyes are put in. My girlfriend's dtr was born without 1 of her eyes and was fitted with a glass eye. The other eye had glaucoma from birth and she had minimal vision but enough to still get around. An unfortunate accident on a trip to Costa Rica as she was walking through a forest with her tour group occurred. A tree brach smacked her in the other eye and detached her retina permanently. Doctors tried to reattach it but there was no vision in spite of the reattachment. At 19, she learned to live in a world of total blindness. But because she is so brilliant, she got a seeing eye dog and went on to college in Berkley, California, was an honors student, got married and is now a professional writer as well as a stock broker. Incredible worldly success for a person with no sight. And a glass eye. I wouldn't doubt that somewhere in the world there is someone alive with no eyes or fingerprints. Their identity would have to be established but I can't imagine how it could be done at security checkpoints except with general pictures and some type of medical card to carry. It's a very good point you brought up. Something that sure isn't impossible to occur.
grizzwald: Would not having a finger print in a way ...be a fingerprint?
just kidding
Hi Griz, That is a very interesting point there. Not having a fingerprint would indeed be a finger print in a different way. An identification of some sort of mutation would be the identification of a person. At least in this case it would be. EXCELLENT POINT YOU MADE!!
