Dog Question..... (30)

Oct 13, 2011 8:43 AM CST Dog Question.....
I have a 14 year old labrador and recently got a new spaniel pup, the pup loves the lab but the old dog won't even look at him and runs into the next room to get away barking like mad, the pup thinks this is great fun and always submits when he barks.

I'm kind of worried about my lab because he's always on edge when the pup is arounddunno

We had other dogs before and he never a problem with them, he actually loved playing with them, is this just old age??

I suspect it is. My dog is now approaching eleven and he similarly has no time for young pups whereas he used to love to play with other dogs.

It's an age thing...it comes to us all...grumpy old men and all that...grin

cheers

I'd say its an age thing, poor lab just doesn't have the energy he used to.
Awwww....sucks.

They will get used to each other after a while...The pup is just boisterous as all pups are and its too much for the old mutt..feel sorry for him too at his age having to share his home with a header like thatgrin

Cheers folks, yeah i thought it might just be old age, it's kind of like he's afraid of him though aswell dunno

I don't think the lab has much left in him anyway, everyday is kind of a bonus at this stage sigh

14 is a good age for a lab m8, most dont make it past 10 conversing

i'd try nd keep the 2 seperate as the "stress" the puppy would give the lab aint a good thing, last time i got a puppy to join an older dog i used to take the puppy for a walk seperatly nd make him run&fetch etc to tire him out so that when they where together afterwards da puppy wouldn't be as active nd stressfull for the older dog thumbs up

14 is a great age for a lab so well done for that, id say its down to a combo of old age and him being set in his ways. think about it from his perspective hes been on his own doing his own thing then all of a sudden this mad bouncy ball of annoyingness (its a spaniel so it must be mad-iv got 2 laugh ) has set up shop in his house and is probably driving him round the twist. best thing is keep them apart and run the legs off the pup then let them rest together.

you said the lab is massive, maybe put him on an obesity food and it will help get his weight down and give him a bit more energy too, my 13 yr old springer is on it as she has a heart condition and cant even go for a 5 min walk without being wrecked but the food has got her weight down from 24kg to around 18kg.

hope thats some use to you mac wave

might sound silly but they can suffer from depression and the little dog could be making him miss his other friend. chances are he will get used to him eventually but only at his own pace. the obesity food might still be worthwhile for him seeing as he is a lab, they aint called doggie dustbins for nothing laugh

retrievers are meant to be light lean dogs and they tend to be nervy and excitable at the same time which doesnt really help with holding weight. you should do a body condition score on him/her from here you want it to be around 3-3.5 for him/her to be healthy and you should also worm them regularly too

yup the sensitivity control is a chicken and rice or duck and rice based diet, its very bland and works great for dogs with dodgy stomachs just make sure he only gets his proper amount of it a day and if he gets treats during the day try to use from his daily amount and it will keep his weight in check hug

Thanks Sal, the vet always tells me she's healthy, but I'd love her to gain a bit of weight....

And I know all about the "nervy and excitable" laugh

some dogs just arent built to hold weight, one of mine gets fat when hes nervous like if i go away or he doesnt see me much he gets fat but for the most part he looks like a fluffy skeleton walking around but is healthy. as long as shes fit and healthy with good muscle tone i wouldnt worry too much about her weight, better for her to be a little under weight than overweight

depends on his size cause some of them are tiny and some are massive but the body condition score will work for him aswell so again you want him around 3-3.5 just remember to measure it with your hands on him as his coat might make him look fatter than he is wink
