Apparently from what I've read and seen on CBC news,the Harper Government is trying to introduce a bill to finally get rid of the gun registry...Im not sure when?...but we'll see what happens ...Could be alot of debate over this...
Nikogas: I don't know that much about your country to make a intelligent comment.
Hello,..
Here where I live in Canada were having issues on gun ownership,...We constantly have to renew our licences,...We have to register our firearms,...If you own Ten or more ( In Canada ) The police have the right to visit you as often as they want ,...We are to lock up our fire arms,...We have to lock our firearms in specific ways ...etc...

is there registry for long gun now?? and what about hand guns? not to confuse, but while we are at it. ;-}
goddess2009: Yes we do have Long Gun Registry now...And Hand Guns have always been registered here too...
wow, I really had no idea, I wonder does Canada have separate laws for each State/Province/territory like we do here? Here each state has its own laws on firearms,,, they probably have to also abide by a federal law, the state to state laws on say concealed handguns and knives can be very confusing.

I hope this helps a little?...
Here (in U.S.) we are supposed to have the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms. It has always seemed a bit odd to me that, here, it is the conservatives (generally, the Republican Party) that is adamant about upholding this right. (I would think it would be the more liberal view, but someone out there feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Now, I am a Democrat, and very liberal minded, but I also uphold that very important right, although I do not own or carry any type. [I'm a fisherman...] but don't get me wrong--I'll eat the elk or deer if somebody else does the work. Just being honest....

I know nothing about Canadas laws regarding this issue,but there are a few websites that attempt to clear up the state to state confusion here in the US. As an example here in Arizona we dont register guns at at all and assuming you have nothing in your background to preclude it, if your 21 or over can carry consealed without a permit.On the other hand they do have a permit process if you want additional places to carry a gun.
In response to: Should we have it ?... Or not ?...What are your thoughts ?...
The Canadian Long Gun Registry,....a multi-BILLION dollar waste of money,...will soon be no more. A government attempt at "counting the guns" held by the citizens veiled under the guise of "a crime prevention initiative". I am not against the registration of weapons,...but the way this fiasco was introduced and handled was quite sad, pathetic,...and of great cost to the citizens of Canada with no benefit acheived.

Yeah we know all about Arid Zona's non existant gun laws. We were made painfully aware of them back in January when Jared Loughner who had nothing in his background to preclude him buying a 31 shot clip and spraying bullets into a crowd killing and maining a lot of innocent people including a 13 YO girl. You guys are supplying the Mexican drug cartels with weapons I heard.
Albertaghost,Nikogas,Rohaan,Mustbnutz and A-Non-A-Moose,...
I think its kinda neat to learn something new in another country as you see it here on the forums everyday... Thank You all for giving your thoughts...Very interesting !

It actually has been hunting season for quite some time,....with those silent but very deadly bows! And as another tidbit for discussion,...look up violent crime (including homicide) in Canada and you will see that KNIVES are actually the more utilized weapon,....hmmm,...maybe the government should consider a kitchen and hunting knife registry,...(just teasing,...I hear its already on its way! )

Years ago when I lived in NYC they enacted a long gun registry and my brother said he was going to register all his rifles. He had about 3 including a beautiful Sako Forester .243. I told him, you're nuts, I'm not going to register my .270. Well, he did register his guns and about 4-6 weeks later the city told him he had to surrender his rifles within 10 days. He took the guns out of state to PA and I said, "I told you so".

Agree totally. It was a bad policy from the moment of conception. It belongs in the same realm as a sword registry, or one for butcher knives and meat cleavers and razor edged cutters. Having 'grown up' with the US NRA and learning all about all types of guns in the Scouts, I see no valid coherent thought behind any registration, with the sole exception of full automatic weapons, cannons, rockets etc. so easily attainable on the US surplus market at bargain basement prices; but simply for inventory purposes; same as when one buys a tank, one must sign Federal docs. to dismantle any weapons systems that may still be operating,( strange logic in that, that restriction does not apply to hand grenades if one buys them from an authorized arms dealer). All countries should need no more laws or restrictions that Switzerland has. Unfortunately, several countries have a gun-worshiping, violence prone 'shoot-em-up' attitudes history, which is the antitheses of the population of the Swiss and most European populations. Yet, most European countries don't dare be as free in their gun laws(gun control) ...go figure

Who the hell is "you guys"?.......Can you be a little more specific who "these guys are"?
