Could very well be so,at least according to Newser/NY Times...

Of course,Americans, just like Europeans are extremely happy about this development, after all,we owe everyone everything, not the opposite....

Doesn´t matter if 1/3 are living under,or close to the poverty line,-all that matters, that we´re nice and human,-and show solidarity....

So,hand on heart, how did the mighty USA,(according to this article),become a third world nation,(or close)?

A wild guess,-the "melting pot",-turned out to be a melt´n´rot!

Maybe I´m wrong,but I have a feeling,this "pot",originally was a European one....

I could be wrong however,-but something tells me I´m not...

So,-again,I might be wrong,-but there has to be a reason,-why 1/3 of Americans live under the poverty line!

Let´s see, could it be because of European/S.Asian immigration,or because of Third world immigration, the same lovely and enriching one, that´s hitting Europe...

There´s reasons to everything,and there´s a reason,why 33% of Americans are considered poor....But what can it be?

3rd. world country???

Poverty line?

What is the threshold income that defines poverty line in US to start with ?.

That number is way above many countries average income!!!

For me, as long as I have covered my basic needs it does not matter my income but the way I live and what is important for me in life -family, friends, work...-.

Which direction is the discussion going with this topic? America does have those who live in poverty, either below, at or slightly above the poverty line. But that is the government's decision on what the poverty level is.

I still manage to eat, have a place to live and even have internet access and I am way below the poverty level. Without government assistance, I might add....

Americans are too greedy. Many people in the United States now look for free money and food stamp handouts from the Government instead of working great like their Fathers and Mothers had to do in the past to earn money and to get out of Poverty...make financial ends meet.

The threshold for poverty in the US is about $12,500 dollars per year.

Some Americans are not in good health and cannot work anymore in Society. They depend on the Government for support. The Baby Boomer Generation.

We all live in an aging Society where there is no money for the poor, unless through Charity from the lucky wealthy. The smart young people in America still live with Mum and Pop to support the household. That is one reason why the world economy is suffering.

Maybe the time is coming to ask ourselves about our economical and political system. A system with 1% big bosses owning 70% of everything, must have something wrong in itself. Of course it is easyer to look responsabilities in the "poor people", easyer then asking how it could be. There are 3 millions persons in jail. Rich people are living in Condos with private police all around. The educational american budget it is smaller then the animal protection society. I think something is wrong here.

I think you had better bring some examples, since in the US the Educational Budget is the responsibility of the States!
I think you are greatly exaggerating comparing the Humane Society's Budget with the Education Budget!rolling on the floor laughing

Cough cough (clearing throat):

The President’s FY2011 budget request calls for significant increases in education spending and, as promised, the Department of Education is exempt from Obama’s so-called spending freeze.

At a briefing today at the Department of Education, words such as “historic” and “bold” were used to describe the President’s budget. Secretary Duncan stated that the FY2011 budget represents “one of the largest increases” in education spending, which the president “sees as the key to our economic future”.

But is more spending on education the key to economic prosperity? For that matter, is it even the key to raising academic achievement?

Since 1985, inflation-adjusted federal spending on K-12 education has increased 138 percent. Yet, indicators of educational improvement such as increases in academic achievement and graduation rates have remained flat.

Can we hypothesize that more money spent creates dumber students? dunno

According to my understanding this is an inaccurate and biased way of interpreting the information, because the powerful American millionaires, "-the happy few-", are no less rich, quite the contrary, they are making more money and own the largest share of media production, and for the poor and middle class, slow but surely, there is less money and resources to go around.

This is my perception, from the third world!sad flower

Geedy people are every where John.

12,500 dollar per year might not be enough for some one who has to pay rent but it can be a good income for many people in other countries.

We all get trapped into the material world, some longer and we tend to ignore the show of life that is free to enjoy. (as long as basic needs are covered and yes we do have to work for them)

Just today I had to go to some place because of my work and the sunset was stunning, the sun was redish and huge, lovely.

Thanks for the video

uh oh

grin

And I will keep dreaming about travelling ....for the rest I care not.

Look at Chavez (Venezuela's President) and Lula (ex president of Brazil) they both have cancerand Steve Jobs and the wife of the richest man in the world at this moment Carlos Slim -both died of cancer- ....

Let us enjoy today because money can not buy life.

Wondering, if America is now a third world nation what do Mexicans hope to find when they cross the border in numbers that far exceed the reverse.
