mcattack: Do you still use your mobile phone while driving??

@baldy...nowhere in Ireland can take more than 4 hours by car...surely people can wait more than 4 hours for a smoke...if you're on a plane and the journey is 4 hours you have no choice but to wait and you don't die of lack of nicotene, same in a vehicle, just wait till you get to your destination...simple!!

I have hands free in my car

so when i get to my destination i can light up in a house full of ppl with no aircon etc and no questions asked?? confused

as for the 4 hour journey that depends on where you live, from dublin yes its most likely the case, from cork to belfast takes a lil longer than that, heck i'm in east cork it takes nearly 3 hrs to get from here to the outback of west cork and thats in the same county!! conversing

baldydude: where is it all going to stop tho? like whats next? not allowed to take a drink of water whilst driving? have a biscuit?

as for the health issue for other passengers, 99% of smokers as soon as they light up the 1st thing they do is open a window nd the drive wind sucks out the air, not to mention the air-conditioner, so i reckon a car is probably a cleaner environment for a non smoker than any other place where they encounter smokers

as for the comment of most journey's being less than an hour, personally i have to go on regular journeys that take a lot longer than that and thats just to see my family, plus what about the professional drivers truckers etc that spend 50% of their week in their vehicles?

yes i know smoking is bad for me, but its MY choice, i've never lit up one in a vehicle if there was non smokers aboard that objected to it, an outright ban is just ridiculous never mind as to how they plan to enforce it!!

thumbs up To me smoking in front of children whether its in a car, a house or wherever, its just common sense. You just don't do it. I object to being told I can't smoke in my own car though. I have no kids and its usually just me in the car so where is the sense in a blanket ban? I never light a cigarette while the car is moving and use the ashtray so I don't see the problem. Okay i know its bad for me thats my own business surely. Oh and taking a drag of a cigarette while driving is no different than changing the radio station. It takes a couple of seconds and you don't even have to take your eyes off the road to do it.

As for comparing it to a mobile phone, when you are on a mobile phone without a hands-free kit, your hand is off the wheel for at least a couple of minutes. Thats not the case with smoking a cigarette.

As for nowhere in Ireland being more than six hours to drive to, thats hardly the point. The point is this country is becoming a nanny state. Next they will be telling us when to go to the toilet and when to go to bed.

Bottom line.....if its not harming anyone but yourself than why is it even an issue?

Can you not smoke outside before you enter the house?? dunno

Ok fair enough but what's wrong with pulling over and having a smoke?? it takes 5 minutes MAX!! smoking can cause dangerous driving, it's a fact, not to mention in a car it's pretty unhygienic....this is coming from a smoker too conversing

Considering it takes as long to take a drag of a cigarette or flick the ash as it does to change the radio station, are they going to ban that too? To change the radio station, you have to take your eyes off the road but to take a drag of a cigarette or flick the ash, you don't.

taken from the AA route planner....

From: Fermoy, Fermoy, County Cork
To: Castletownbere, County Cork, Republic Of Ireland
Distance: 160.45 km (Show in Miles)
Time: 2 hr 57 min

bantry to castletownbere would take you nearly another hour due to the fabulous conditions of the roads down there dunno

DUBLINGUY1973: Most but not all and not everyone has a new car.

So if Jedward or Westlife came on the radio, you would suffer through it instead of changing the station?

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest, most songs only last for around 3 minutes
