mmmmuntouchable: I never smoke in my car but, the only reason being is its brand new and the kids are mostly with me.even when their not I still dont as it will make their carseats stink! I did before though. Drove from ashbourne to donnybrook everyday and couldn't do city centre traffic without a smoke! I dont see how its dangerous. Im a good driver so I can do both, safely! If thats the case they should ban old men picking the snotter of themselves. The finger is rammed up their noses longer then it takes me to smoke a full cigarette We pay tax, we pay insurance, we pay for nct, we pay for our licence and fuel and now they want to tell us what to do? nah i dont think so!!!!

laugh

what about reappyling our lippy ....lips

I think smoking should be banned while driving for safety and health reasons,it makes sense....

baldydude: whilst driving:
smoking in cars is dangerous ..
opening a can of fizzy drink in a car is dangerous..
opening a candybar in a car is dangerous...
changing the radio station is dangerous...
screaming kids in a car is dangerous....
distracting animals in cars is dangerous...
sneezing in cars is dangerous....
talking with your passengers is dangerous...
changing a cd is dangerous....
advertising on the side of the road is dangerous...
trying to follow a sat-nav is dangerous...

these are just a very small few of the excuses i've heard when attending to accidents, why not just ban driving all toghether

DUBLINGUY1973: Excellent points. Sneezing is involuntary but it can be just as dangerous as smoking. Drinking coffee while driving is even more dangerous than smoking while driving in my opinion.

baldydude: yes they are all facts, but what have they to do with driving cars??

Those facts have nothing to do with your driving ability ............... but smoking while driving is a danger to your lungs and why should it be ok for you to be allowed to drive for part of a journey with one hand while the non smokers have the full use of two ................ maybe a higher insurance rate for smokers might be worth thinking about, that is what i would do if i was in goverment ........ professor

Your lungs. Not anyone else's if you are alone in the car. You are not going endanger another motorist's health just by smoking while driving.

Unless you are taking a drag of a cigarette every ten seconds (which is highly unlikely), I don't know someone's hands would be off the wheel for that long.

I agree car insurance premiums for smokers should be double that of non smoking drivers... you could take a heart attack whilst driving from excessive smoking and crash the vehicle killing innocent people wrecking lives and causing carnageireland

I hear what you are sayng N...........IMO., if it is your house/car/etc and only you useit, then smoke away to your hearts content, armed with the knowledge that what you are doing is bad for you ....... then the only person that you are harming is yourself bouquet

But you have to take one hand off the steering wheel whilst changing gear.

If you can't drive competently with one hand, you can't drive competently...imo.

Exactly, N wave

I think the only thing stopping them from banning smoking altogether is the revenue they get from taxing it.

As i said before, i would have no problem with them banning it while there are kids in the car. They shouldn't have to ban that though. People should have enough common sense not to do it in the first place.

A blanket ban is ridiculous though if the only one you are harming is yourself.

DUBLINGUY1973: Heart attacks are not exclusive to smokers though.

Thats true I also forgot to add Artheriosclerosis and the restriction of blood flow to the legs and arms impairing the drivers ability to operate the vehicle in a safe manner...a smoking driver could suddenly lose the feeling in their legs and thats not something you want to happen if driving at motorway speedsireland

I don't think you can compare smoking while driving to using a mobile phone without a hands free kit though. When you're on the phone, your hand (with the mobile phone) is up to your ear for way longer than it takes to take a drag from a cigarette.

Taking your hand off the wheel to change gears, use the indicators etc., ......... comes as part of driving and has to be done......... smoking or chatting while holding a mobile phone, putting on make-up etc., does not ........ conversing

Maybe not but it takes just as long to take a drag of a cigarette as it does to change gears.

DUBLINGUY1973: So it would be okay for someone with a specially adapted car to smoke and drive since they don't use their legs anyway?

Thats different because the drivers car is specifically adapted for their disability..if you lose the power of your legs in a standard car your up the creek with no paddle...if you lose the power of your arms you could use your chin to steer I often do it when my arms feel weakireland

And you have to take the cigarette out of the pack(Maybe even tear the plastic cover off) .... get your lighter, matches and light up ....... and it is still bad for you wink smoking

What's the big deal about driving with one hand?

I rarely drive with both hands on the steering wheel and I've been driving for over forty years....yet to drive into anyone.

dunno

smoking is not for pleasure, its a addiction, big difference conversing

a mobile phone distracts you from driving and you lose concentration, smoking whilst driving for the majority of smokers is the same as changing a gear or use the indicator, i.e. its part of a routine and it aint any more dangerous than changing a cd or havin a drink of water whilst driving, if you cant drive competently with only using one hand on the steering wheel, than you have no business driving a vehicle sigh
