Well personally i would never actually light up a cigarette while the car is moving. I'd always do it before i set off or at traffic lights. You need two hands to open a pack of cigarettes anyway because of the foil.

according to the smoking act yes, but its not being enforced by the garda unless your transporting passengers i'e' bus drivers nd taxi's etc

The thread was about smoking in a car, should it be banned or not? ...and we have moved from the damage that smoking can do to a person to where we are now, driving with one hand ....... like the people that wish to smoke while alone in a car, driving with one hand is entirely your choice but that does not make it the right choice .......

Why is it not the right choice?
Almost all cars have power steering these days...two hands are not needed to control the car...well not by me. Might be different for you, if it is I suggest you keep both hands on the steering wheel and don't exceed 5mph.

I havent read all the thread but I have to say I'm against it.
Why are they contemplating bringing the ban in ?
Protection of children ?
If thats the case there is far less ventilation in someone house than there is in the car so why pick on car owners/drivers only ?
Protection of other road users ?
Are they going to ban using a radio /cd player in the car ? Are they going to ban women putting on their make up in the car and men/women shaving
on the way to work ? Its already covered under 'driving without due care and attention.I personally think its a publicity stunt and a discrimatory law.

Did you know, countless people suffer quite serious injuries from picking their noses whilst driving and being in a collision at the same time...

And @ Baldy ......... You can not use the fact that it is ok to smoke because you are addicted and it is not your fault. You may be addicted but the person breathing in your smoke is not.......... someone snorting coke, shooting up drugs are only hurting themselves ...... The goverment is not talking about banning smoking because it is effecting a persons ability to drive ......... but because sitting and breathing in the smoke is bad for you and for others who have no choice but to sit with/beside you ........ie CHILDREN !

yes and u know anyone who is of sound mind and who cares for their kids would not smoke in a car with there kids it ....u know i feel when the goverment pay for my car they can dictate to me what i do in it ....wat will it be next ....and btw i dont smoke.............

as for the health issue for other passengers, 99% of smokers as soon as they light up the 1st thing they do is open a window nd the drive wind sucks out the air, not to mention the air-conditioner, so i reckon a car is probably a cleaner environment for a non smoker than any other place where they encounter smokers
as for the comment of most journey's being less than an hour, personally i have to go on regular journeys that take a lot longer than that and thats just to see my family, plus what about the professional drivers truckers etc that spend 50% of their week in their vehicles? yes i know smoking is bad for me, but its MY choice, i've never lit up one in a vehicle if there was non smokers aboard that objected to it, an outright ban is just ridiculous never mind as to how they plan to enforce it!!
Isnt that considered their workplace and banned already?
