The Minister for Health........ Dr. Reilly has said he favours legislating for a ban on smoking in cars when children are present, but is against a total ban.

Firstly When kids are riding in the car, to my way of thinking its an absolute no no,
I think thats an absolute in my book and ideally, as its a matter of due care, we shouldnt need legislation to tell us that, but it happens.
In my job, the car was described as a place of work, despite diverse opinions and subject to the 2004 Smoking Regulations.
I dont smoke, but starting chemical warfare in a car or closed space where kids are, shouldnt happen..."Nanny State" or otherwise.

proper order dont think anybody could defend smoking in an enclosed space with children present...I'd ban tobacco completely if I had my way..nasty habit

Yep...i'm all for it, i'v been in cars where people have crashed and nearly crashed from lighting up smokes, i'v nearly done it myself too...you're gonna have the people arguing that "it's my car and i'll smoke if i want to" but if that's the case then why can't you use your mobile in YOUR car..

Most regular journeys in a car will not take more than an hour, some much less, so if you can't wait an hour for a smoke then this ban will help you give them up at least.

Plus it will stop people flicking them out the window...another thing i can't stand!!

I am all for it too! Not fair on other people who are in the car, and not only that, even if you dont smoke, chemicals still remain in the car for a long time!

For the people that are raging about it, please try understand it was brought in for your own health and for the health of others! thumbs up

I agree with it, but then im a non-smoker and think its a rotten habit. And find people who smoke in small spaces where others who dont smoke and children are disgusting and disrespectful to the other persons health..
In saying that.. i do understand the other arguement.. I just dont agree with it! :)

all for it, i'm only off the smokes a few weeks but always reckoned it was stupid to smoke around children, and instead of a fine a good slap across the face should be the punishment.

where is it all going to stop tho? like whats next? not allowed to take a drink of water whilst driving? have a biscuit? dunno

as for the health issue for other passengers, 99% of smokers as soon as they light up the 1st thing they do is open a window nd the drive wind sucks out the air, not to mention the air-conditioner, so i reckon a car is probably a cleaner environment for a non smoker than any other place where they encounter smokers dunno

as for the comment of most journey's being less than an hour, personally i have to go on regular journeys that take a lot longer than that and thats just to see my family, plus what about the professional drivers truckers etc that spend 50% of their week in their vehicles? dunno

yes i know smoking is bad for me, but its MY choice, i've never lit up one in a vehicle if there was non smokers aboard that objected to it, an outright ban is just ridiculous never mind as to how they plan to enforce it!! confused

as i said i've never lit up one where non smokers objected, smoking in the company of tots, baby's nd young children is a no no under any circumstances be it in a car, boat, plane,at home or any other place, that goes without saying.

I do not know how they would go about enforcing this law if it was legislated.......... be it a full ban or a ban where there are children in the car dunno Would they have to catch you with the cigarette in your mouth/hand.... would it have to be lit or would the smell of smoke be enough for you to face a fine .......... conversing

Do you still use your mobile phone while driving?? dunno

@baldy...nowhere in Ireland can take more than 4 hours by car...surely people can wait more than 4 hours for a smoke...if you're on a plane and the journey is 4 hours you have no choice but to wait and you don't die of lack of nicotene, same in a vehicle, just wait till you get to your destination...simple!! conversing
