When I was married we didnt have a house, we were an army family and moved every 12 months. I got a small settlement several years later when he left the Defence Force.

For me this house is my first house purchase ever. I wanted the money to work hard for me, I believe it has. It was very difficult to get a home as a single mum, I dont live where I'd like, I wish I was on a few acres somewhere - but this is what I can afford, its mine, and one day - if Im lucky I'll get to live the dream.

Not all settlements are messy and everything sold - I had to buy my ex out to keep the house and he came alot better off than me as property prices dropped badly in NZ and so I lost alot of money where's he did alright

and as for legal fees, if you do split clean, keeps cost down, especially when ya use same lawyer and are in agreement about everything wine

ps. mind you, i made him pay the lawyer laugh wine

You did well Nutz... I've not been very lucky with real estate...

My first house I gave to my first ex wife. I had put down a minimum deposit, and we hadn't bult up enough equity to cover the real estate fees and commissions. So I just let her have the house, and moved out.

My second house I gave to my second ex wife. I had put down a minimum deposit, and we hadn't bult up enough equity to cover the real estate fees and commissions. So I just let her have the house, and moved out.

My third house I owned for twelve years. Then sold it when I left Canada, at a loss. I almost got my deposit back out of it - so I might as well have rented. Except rent would have been less...

I think a lot of people are starting to think that way as it is so difficult to pay a mortgage, rates and upkeep on a property on one income .. something has to give which could be a lifestyle.

For many, bricks and mortar are more important, which is understandable when young children are involved but for me I'd rather have the flexibility and freedom that comes with renting and although I pay the landlord's mortgage, I have never had to put my hand in my pocket for anything else - it's all down to him wine

I guess I am lucky I own what I have and I am shocked at the cost of rents and morgages people have to pay it must be very hard. I know just the land rates and water rates are sky high and having that on top of a morgage is not right. Something should be done about it every year the land rates have gone up $50 that is a lot of money for a young struggling family to find or pensioners. I can't see what we are getting for our money re shire rates robbers. thumbs down
