I do agree with you, sometimes a thread hijack can be a good thing, if the op disappears and people continue on , having fun, after all, this site is meant to be fun isn't it ? And nobody can dictate to another what is fun, as long as its harmless to anyone. I do wonder sometimes why people get so serious , arguing about politics and religion, there are sites that are meant for serious discussions and this is not one. Although some light discussion on these topics are ok, after all, some people are here to find partners, it is a dating site, and people will want to find out if they share certain veiwpoints. But I think sometimes these discussions descend into two or three people fighting with each other, getting nasty. And thats not what this site is supposed to be about. JMO

jac379: I always read your posts whenever I see them and I'll stalk you if I see your name on my home page. I don't know if that's particularly reassuring, but I do like reading that which you have to say.
Serious discussion can be good in terms of finding a like-minded partner, can't it? Sometimes people just really enjoy a proper nitty gritty debate thread and maybe only two. or three people have really gotten into a subject. Loads of threads, loads of pages, room for everything, I say. Having said that, I agree with you if it gets nastily abusive.
Dear Jaq,
It's nice to read of your voyage of self discovery, to admit ones faults is a very difficult thing, but don't let these things become a crutch. Like saying, "ok I'll play ball with you, but I have a bad leg". Excusing in advance any failure. I'm sure you are not doing this.

Vulpine: Eh....are we actually disagreeing???
You beg to differ on what? That we should listen to each other more (metaphorically of course)? I guess I really meant simply what you yourself voiced that a certain amount of altruism wouldn't go astray. I did reference the futility of trawling through too many pages. But yes also vous avez raison encore viz. it also overall being self-serving by maintaining general interactive banter. Or the hijacking thing? You've made excellent points which I hadn't thought of either about the hijacking actually being useful. Re. the bumping. And if a thread has already been well aired, what's the harm in fun? That makes sense. I have to say though, that it does irritate me seeing a *sensitive* topic, or really important topic being steamrolled by hijacking. I'm saying nothing new here, but I guess, it'd be a perfect world if common sense actually was common. And people would use good discretion. But then there'd be nobody to make the tea would there?!
No, I beg to differ that we should listen more. I think a lot of people do listen, its just that maybe we should be a little more conscious of showing that we're listening. By the same token, that takes time, inclination, or maybe confidence that some people don't have.
The other side of the coin is that somebody who posts a lot like myself, at least in part to ensure that folks and debates are attended to (like I said, I claim no pure altruism in this), get told to shut up because I like the sound of my own voice too much.
Its a matter of choices, perception and the fact that you just can't please all the people all the time.

tomcatwarne: Hijaq of course variation in opinion makes for an interesting thread thread, but when people take the thread and use it as their own platform this is showing no respect for the OP, if people want to change the thread altogether why not start a new thread?
Another point is the OP who poses the thread and then takes no further part in the said thread. This is as bad as hijacking (in my opinion)
What do you mean by using it as their own platform? Could you make that a little more concrete for me please, Tom?

Yes, of course I don't mean putting their own opinion, which may be diametrically opposed to the OP and still be in context. I mean changing the subject to one of their own, not relayed to the OP's post. I have seen this very cleverly done, and not so cleverly done.
As I said Jaqs., it would be better for all concerned for a new thread to be started.
It is easy at times to sway of the subject of the thread, but deliberately changing the context is non u. IMO, I think this may be, one of the reasons, why the delete buton was introduced
Vulpine: Or do you actually read other people's inputs as well??
if i hv many free time, not feel tired i will read the whole thread, there are many things for doing & reading, another reason is english is not my mother language, then lazy & sometimes read many times but dont understand then no comments :-)))

Vulpine: Of course, there's probably another million and one reasons which I haven't thought of...some of them probably honourable and valuable...which my friend Jac of course will wave under my nose...
Talk to Mr. Smiley, he's all yellow and full of pos-it-tiv-it-teeeee!
Sorry, am I being terribly annoying?
I just don't take pleasure in focussing on that which pees me off.
I think negative generalisations can be far more impolite that a hijack, for instance.

I agree with you 100%, I was not referring to banter, but an outright attempt to manipulate a thread outside of the area of the OP
