second hand cars (36)

So I am looking to buy a cheap run around and I don't want anything above 1.5 (and auto) - looking on DoneDeal and Adverts
Seems my choices are
really old micras - too small
Even older Toyota starlets
Mitsubishi - seem white and boy racerish
Fiat Punto - told the head WILL go
High mileage Corollas
Opel Corsa
Diahatsu Terios

Or - what would you buy - perhaps more pertinent what would you avoid?
Looking at a max of 1700.

Sally

Have you ever taught of going to your local independent car dealer and ask what he/she has in stock to your budget, you may be surprised and you might get a bargain in the process.

tried that - automatics are not that common on the forecourts. Loads in England but the VRT & ferry cost more than the car. roll eyes

snowlynx: Will this be your first vehicle? if so then a car would be better than a van perhaps?

Yeah, gonna go with a car first, year or so, get a bit of experience, no claims (hopefully) and proceed to a Berlingo then, or, maybe a Partner laugh

This is something I do quite a bit of.

No FIATS. Not now. Not ever.

Many of the French brands are not great, especially when they're older. They're soft cars, and maintaining some of the Peughot and Citroens can be difficult.

Opels, again, not great cars when they're older. Some difficulty with maintenance, soft engines in some.

Fords, Nissans, Toyotas. Very difficult to go wrong there.

A Fiesta is very economical on fuel, a cinch to maintain - cost wise and work wise, and cheap second hand.

A Corolla hatch or saloon 1.3 litre, of the 1992 - 1997 model are absolutely brilliant. You will pick one up for around a thousand with low mileage, but they'll easily do 240,000 miles if looked after.

Nissan Almera, the older model. 99-00 they stopped making them? Available with 100,000 - 120,000 miles for around 1000 euro. Good car, cheap enough to run, cheap parts.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS NCT!! AS long as possible, no 3 month or 1 month left jobs. You'll have to dig, but good deals are out there. Done Deal is grand as long as you're not silly. Always bring a mechanic with you to check the car.

Possibly learn to drive stick. tongue

Actually teaching my nephew to drive at the moment and while we were practising the reversing around the corner I thought I'd try it myself! Hadn't done it since my own test and it was harder than I thought!

Ha ha, best of luck to you. That's exactly the point with FIATS. Italians build them - it's all about aesthetics rather than practicality and reliability.

Here's a few to get you on the road. Pun intended. .

Low mileage

Very low miles, nct.

Automatic, good nct, mileage.

See, now I would have dismissed the first 2 as I think are too old and the other as too big...
OK back to the drawing board for me ...

The one thing that did turn my head was 2000 reg 2litre pig of a chrysler at 1300.

But thank you for the input it has made me realise I don't want a fiat or a citreon.
