You are right. Maltese was even not accepted as an official language in the European Institutions. It was impossible to find native good translators!

Fascinating how many languages everyone here speaks!rose

I think also, very important, is - Body Language and "Sign" language!

We can communicate across most language barriers if we`re willing to do a bit of "acting" - using all our talents?

Actually, Italian is one of the few languages as far as I know that has gestures.
A hell of a lot of hand gestures.

In response to: So ........ can you converse in a language that is not your mother tongue?

When I came to France in 1989 I didn't speak a word of French, but I spoke passable Japanese (for a gaijin) and enough Mandarin and Indonesian to get by from day to day on a very basic level.

However, having to learn French, and having no opportunity to speak the Asiatic languages for over 20 years, I've pretty much lost the ability to speak them.

Oh, and way back when I was in high school I learned to speak quite a bit of American sign language because my girlfriend's little sister was deaf. Mostly forgotten now.

Would you be so kind as to qualify from where you got your information?

Not at the local grocery shop, I hope! I got mine from Wikipedia.

"Maltese (Malti) is the national language of Malta, and a co-official language of the country alongside English, while also serving as an official language of the European Union, the only Semitic language so distinguished".
