matera: Would you be so kind as to qualify from where you got your information?

Not at the local grocery shop, I hope! I got mine from Wikipedia.

"Maltese (Malti) is the national language of Malta, and a co-official language of the country alongside English, while also serving as an official language of the European Union, the only Semitic language so distinguished".

Anyone can add information to Wikipedia it is just as reliable as getting information from the grocery shop.

smoky: I used to speak 2 and a bit, and now I speak half of two, and about a quarter of another.

I used to speak English and Afrikaans and a little bit of Zulu.
Then I came to Switzerland, and learned some German and lost a lot of my English, and I understand about a quarter of Swiss German.

Oh yes, of course I forgot about my Fhasi. I think I may have forgotten that by now though. No chance to speak it here.

So ........ can you converse in a language that is not your mother tongue?

I speak two languages only, Norwegian and English, but also understands Swedish and Danish (literally because they are similar and share most words, with slight variations).

I've been wanting to learn a new language for a while, but aren't sure which one. I've been looking into some languages, and gotten some learning material. I have to teach it to myself so it will be interesting. I do however think cracking one language will make cracking next easiergrin

Everyone here is SO talented!

It`s taken me about 8 years to just learn this German stuff, and I still battle with the Swiss-German dialect! Can understand the dialect but can only speak a few words of it - hard to get the tongue around the dialect!

In SA, when I learned to speak Zulu, the instructor, a lovely big black dude, made us hold a mirror in front of our faces, and said "as you speak Zulu, your lips must go out and touch the mirror" - aaahhhhh....... I got it perfect after that, the pronunciation is all in how you hold your mouth and lips!

With Swiss-German it seems to be about not moving your mouth - you keep it frozen stiff and utter from down in the throat with lots of ggghhhhs.

People in Strasbourg.
I spend most days listening to French lessons but it seems to go in one ear and out the other.
I wish a French/English speaking person would give me some time over a coffee on my barge to help me get along further.
When I go out in Strasbourg I hear all the lovely conversations (well I think they sound lovely) but I have to keep my ears pricked for an English conversation if I want to talk to anyone.

I don't think you wish hard enough. Man, you are in da country itself!
Try language exchange. I did that. You pay nothing. Google it, I'm sure there are some people in France who would like to improve their English. So you meet and teach each other.

RayfromUSA: When I came to France in 1989 I didn't speak a word of French, but I spoke passable Japanese (for a gaijin) and enough Mandarin and Indonesian to get by from day to day on a very basic level.

However, having to learn French, and having no opportunity to speak the Asiatic languages for over 20 years, I've pretty much lost the ability to speak them.
