smoky: Not Spanish? The Conquistadors or whatever they called themselves, from Spain, didn`t they invade (discover) South America?.. they found all that gold of the Incas and Mayans....? and exchanged their language for it?...and their religion.

Interesting that. I think they told the Mayans/Incas that they now had to be virgins, and to "give their hearts to the Son of God" ...... so the Mayans/Incas (whichever came first) cut the hearts out of virgins (and others worthy of the deed), and then offered the hearts to the Sun (their God)... and then ate them.
And so then they were called "savages".

They should have been taught to first read and write in English or Spanish or whatever, so they could tell the difference between "Sun" and "Son"?

Anyway, I now go to Google what is the official language of Brazil. I`m pretty darn sure it must be Spanish! Somehow Portuguese doesn`t go too good with the Rio Carnival fiesta ..... more like Spanish!

Spanish, Portuguese, also Italian and others languages have some common roots but they are different.

Portuguese is the official language of Brazil and that is a fact.

Blowing you down with a fact Smoky?

I do not see how.

I made that comment because you like to have the facts right –as you said it above in one of your comments.

You had to cook for your boyfriend?

Is he Steevy from another thread?(the one that does not know how to cook and misses his Mummy's cooking)

Or both your boyfriend and Steevy do not know how to cook.

confused

Never mind!

aahh hahahaaa..... I was making a joke!

I am so lucky - boyfriend cooks very well. But he is working, so he has the delightful experience of eating my food - He loves what I make, we both like the same sort of food.

That is what I was saying in that other thread of Steevyv`s - that you have to learn to choose your partner, make sure you both are happy with whatever is important.

Today I baked bread - we bake 2kg of bread every 2 weeks.... (See what I mean?...we both like our home-made bread and it does not have to be fresh, we both like stale old bread, hahaaa)
Anyway, it did not come out as it usually does - today was a bit "flat" - but it makes no difference - we both enjoy our bread, whatever it`s shape. Just lucky when it comes out "perfect"!

German and English on a native level; French and enough serbo-croatian to manage the day-to-day affairs. I'd really like to learn Spanish, Russian and perhaps Korean or Japanese, but I doubt that'll ever happen without proper school or living there.

Swiss German... As a native German speaker, I wouldn't even attempt to try that one, to be honest. Every other sound is "kch" laugh No wonder they came up with Ricola throat drops laugh

You are very talented! I don`t know how people manage to travel to other countries if they don`t speak or understand English! Spanish is a good choice - I hear a lot of local Italians break into Spanish now and again when they talking to Columbians - must be wonderful to speak so many languages!

Ja - Swiss German is another story!grin

Sweetie, I'm not talented. You must mean the poster above me laugh, but thanks anyway laugh

Yes, I agree with you that it can be a challenge to travel to another country without knowing the language esp. if they use an alphabet other than the latin one. It takes a bit of practice to get used to different letters, convert them into sounds and figure out the word quickly. My rule of thumb: learn some basics before going to such a country and get a mini-dictionary laugh

Would you believe me if I tell you that when I went to Bosnia, the customs employee at the airport didn't even speak English and neither did the people who worked at the police registration (where they deal exclusively with foreigners)... BUT the women looked gorgeous .. you get my drift.

Oh.. re Swiss German... laugh... worse than swiss german is the "bureaucratic swiss german". Even had one of their ministers in stitches:

1:30 to 4:45 laugh

Did you watch that video? Buenderfleisch?.. They got the whole 6 min speech there at that clip. I must say that he doesn't speak a heavy dialect, but I find it impossible to produce a "ch" instead of a "k" and when they speak dialect, I understand nothing.. maybe a word here and there, but that's it.

Hello Smoky,
I can speak Enlish, Polish , and Russian. When I started to learn German I had forgoten English partly. But then, after repeating each day English and German those both languages in my mind liked each other and I was open to learn them both. But when I reached past time in German I had to stop learning it. Maybe if I hadn't stopped learning I would have been able to speak German now? I believe that the best way is the practice every day of each language what you know. wave

EagleWoman: I don´t know if it´s fair to blame anyone else for the decline of one´s language.

During Franco´s reign in Spain, speaking Catalan in Cataluña (Barcelona area) was punishable with death (no trial). Yet the people continued to speak it in secret AND taught their children in secret. When Franco died after many decades of rule, Catalan was re-instated (including as the main language of study for all subjects in schools) without a problem as they ALL spoke it!!

If "the people" don´t want their language to die, it doesn´t!!

Sorry but exaggerate. Franco killed dissidents, that's true, and prohibited the use of Catalan in documents, public signs and any official use, not under death penalty.

But in the last years of his dictatorship, books and magazines began to be published in Catalan despite many obstacles, and people always spoke their language in private.

Now everyone in Catalonia know and can speak Catalan, is used in newspapers, TV and radio, and official documents. And in spanish too.
