Who really breaks one's heart? Is a broken heart caused because of betrayal by another person, or is one actually responsible for their own broken heart because they placed unreal expectations upon another person?

When one loves another, the reality for them is REAL. And so sure expectations go along with that naturally. Humans have expectations in that state and to deny is to lie. The person who has these feelings consider their options first. And if it’s strong enough hiding it is not an option. They take the risk, disclose and with anticipation want their love interest to reciprocate. Should it not work out, I don’t think it’s betrayal. It just is what it is. One’s heart gets crushed and they deal with the consequences of the risk taken. The other usually gets an ego boost.

It does not necessarily have to be either. Lots of reasons I can think of for a broken heart as it's brought on by loss.

depends - we can break the heart of another without doing anything really wrong - if things do not work out and the attraction level is not the same that is no one;s fault

but I think the worst heartbreak does come frm betrayal (the worse it is the greater the chance there was some kind of mean or dishonest behavior)

true

I agree - sometimes there is a reason but no one is necessarily at "fault"

besides blame accomplishes little

We all have our own heart, betrayal, is a choice of expectations. One more deciding thought, is, Is this what I want. SS

Let's be real
Men break women's heart even during the evening meal

Let's be real
Women break men's heart as soon as they find a more lucrative deal

Let's be real
I did watch a few episodes of Remington Steele!

Is it an unreal expectation for a man to stop smoking pot long enough to mow the lawn or take the cars to the shop or (heaven forbid) help with the kids?

I did. But the music was so loud he couldn't hear me.
I've been happily divorced for seven years now.
